Max hp on p18
Ive just had Hutchy drop my 300 promax on my p18 for the records run on coniston to try and set a new record , hopefully i'll be turning a 32 or 34 pitch cleaver and should go well in a straight line.
Ive asked this before but I can't find the answer, so how much horsepower was a p18 built for and how much can one handle

I'm not 100% but id say no more than 175, it may have been as little as 150 for its max rated horse power. My old man had one of the first R18 ever made and i think that was about 150 or 175.
I dont know if the rated hp went up for later models as designs were tweaked
As for what it can handle no that is a different story and open to speculation. like you said- straight lines and cornering two dfferent things, also prop and driver and conditions will make a big difference.
I remember a ski race held at lyme regis many years ago someone put a 235 on an 18 ( cant remember if ring or phantom) but only after a few laps one of the crew was thrown out , I was only young and we all thought they were mad

Nutter!
Think you will be OK with the promax power on a P18. Not sure about the size and weight of that big motor though, only one way to find out, give it a go.

Won't be using promax at coniston feckin typical rig your boat and someone comes and buys your motor.
Sold motor to a guy who's just bought a new chaudron 25.

Just get another motor from your collection and stick it on the P18 for records week.

The 18 is a design from 1973.
It hasn't been 'weeked', in fact, all the 18's to come from Sittingbourne came from the original un-altered1973 mould.
Back then ('73), I assume it would have been intended for the biggest motor available, so summat like a 125/135/140/150 tower of power (1.8 litre straight six Merc)
Any T-O-P experts out there??

So that would have been crankshaft horsepower not prop hp?
Shows how well they were built, I reckon my p18 had over 300hp on it last year and it handled it with ease.
