Mercruiser Drives

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what kind of mercruiser drives these are? Are they Pre-Alpha?

Sorry the pic is from the back and not the side.

Thanks for the link, very helpful. Looking at the pics they look like Alpha ones, I think Gen 1.

Any idea what the numbers mean on the props? I get the 23p but unsure of what the other numbers mean. They look modified to me.

They are Alpha drives Which came in after the Mr drives I have a pair on my boats And they are very good drives But you should have some shower kits made before the top end below And a oil top up bottle On them Which goes in the top Bung on the out side of the drives They used to fit these drives on 7.4 big blocks In the early days Which were free hundred horsepower Hope this information helps

the port transom shield is older than the starboard one, maybe from a drive1. The drives could be R, MR, or alpha, the difference is internal, looks like it had interesting history, good luck if looking for a project. pete L.

Thanks, I had not noticed the difference in the transom shields.

They are attached to this poor old thing, too far gone as a project for me.

A pal of mine has one with a pair of smallblock mercs, nice boat, used to be a popular race boat in the 80's.

This one has a pair of small blocks, both seized. It had been used for racing at some point and looked to be a nice boat in its day. Except for the wing.

I think smallblocks were standard fitment, unlike the arch, don't ever remember seeing one of those before

The arch is an addition, bolted on. Would not take a lot to get it off. The engines in this one were allegedly tweaked, but are scrap now as the air filters and the rocker breathers had been removed, the engine hatch was not sealed so rain water has done its thing.

The boat had been left neglected in some woods for around 10 years and is now in this state. Sad.
