I think so. I`m sure my mate had a grey band black max(non dimpled effect on the cowling) and that was a 91/92 I think. Sure someone will say if I`m wrong.

Sort of grey/silver yes

Motor gods will confirm but in order it runs

Blue
Silver/grey
Bround
red/yellow
see pic from Boats & outboards if thats the one you mean. remember cowlings can migrate & might not be an indication of year.

I'm no motor god, but I thought Brown band came in '85, (first prop rated motors) directly after blue band, then thin Silver/thin Red.

Before Blue band, was Red band, which was all after the merc range were all White, rather than black.

I've always wondered why people refer to the 'band' rather than just the serial no, or year.

Anyway, my old 85 motah was, I think faded red band? Looks kinda brown in the shot, but it wasn't.

In 'Band speak' that would've been a silver band (with red pinstripe)

Red Band (wide red band with Mercury set in it) was pre about '69/'70 I think

"Band Identification" would be a good candidate for it's own page on the main site. As would serial no decoding.
