Talking Mercury vs. Yamaha vs. Evinrude 150 hp

Wanted to get peoples opinions on 150 hp engines. Boat will be set up to race and am trying to decide between the Mercury 150 optimax pro xs, Yamaha 150 hpdi v-max, or the Evinrude 150 h.o. Looking to find out which one is usually the fastest, most reliable, and best overall. I've searched the internet and have found many things that claim one is better than the other but wanted to see if anyone has had first hand experience in seeing these engines run against each other. Your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Im in a team that races in V-150. A class where you have 150 outboards.
We race motsly with E-tec H.O and Pro Xs.
The h.o can rev up to 6100 ish. The Pro X revs only 5750. I would say the H.O have abit more grunt in the top revs and the Pro Xs have Its grunt around 5200 ish. We propped our Pro Xs for those revs.
Personaly i think the Pro Xs is more relaible considering this years races in Sweden . I also like the SmartCraft more than iCommand. SC is abit more refined. They are both great engines but I like the Merc more. (Mabey cuz I have worked with Mercs :P )

Hope this helps abit and that no1 wants to chop My head off

I would go for the Evinrude 150HO. because of pointy gearcase, the weight and the horsepower.

Let's not go into the hp discussion.
You can find som more info here : http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13810
The rude has no official hp rating and surely has far more than 150 horses. Same with the Merc pro XS but the difference is that they do say(lie?) it has only 150 horses...

No info on the Yam, but the internet shows a few graphs saying the 150HO has alot more midrange power +40hp, don't know if that's true though.

My .02 , hope it can help you

E-TEC HO all day long, but be prepared to replace the steerer & tilt tube bushes with bronze, and look at solid or stiffer mounts too.

The opti Pro XS! It is so quick and combined with the speedmaster gearbox would be an unbeatable combo, I'm suprised P1 superstock dont use the 250Pro XS version, must be sponsored by Evinrude lol

But it may or maynot go better with another motor on it,so to say the rude is better because the one on Pauls very efficient hull goes well is a bit misleading.
Paul's does go well tho, i'll give him that!

The lads with the New marshan have the 150xs. And I believe they will be going etec on the next one.

Yeah granted,do we know of a p19 with either a 150 pro xs or yam v-max to compare?
that particular motor was a dog from day one,and he's got a lot of set up still to do.

If Richard does put the ho on a boat then you will have a direct comparison. Actually yes you can find more info. The xs and ho race in f3 ski racing.

From a reliability stand point . I used the etec commercially and they are so reliable. Great motors

You say that, but the Hydrolift ran 92mph down Windermere with an XR2 on the back.

Paul's does go well, but then do does Jake Swans P19 with the 150HO, & the whole FF150 crowd.

None of them are as quick as Jeremy's Phantom 19 with the stock 130 yam on the back though!

6 of one & half a dozen really, an engines an engine, personally I favour the simpler, lighter conventional two stroke engine, whether it be a mercury or a yam (lets face it the non direct injection rudes aint worth a wank) but there not as good on fuel, but hey, if you're racing why am I mentioning fuel consumption!?

For a pleasure or fishing boat, that's not going to be battered about offshore, I'd not be fussed running any of the direct engines.

People have had good and bad experiences with all of them.

I think the simple fact is, no one builds a bad motor anymore. I, for obvious reasons prefer Mercury, but the Evinrudes are pretty sweet, and the Yams are ok as well!

If your asking which model is best for racing, you'll first need to read up on the rule book, and see which motors fit the class.

bullshit, how many 'spare' gearboxes, powerheads, midsections, injectors etc have you 'aquired' which were otherwise getting thrown out.

When I was racing the same boats were running 63/64 mph at best..... Now standard motors have gained 5mph?
