mercury xr2 engine

hi - i bought a phantom 20 with an xr2 engine all new in 1991 - used it for 2 years then hidden from the ex mrs due to a pending divorce

- told her she could have the house but not my beloved boat. what id like to ask is because its been in storage for so long would it be best to have a rebuild on it - if so can anyone suggest somewhere trustworthy that wont take the p***? (as we all know there are too many

around).
it has only ever been turned over by hand once a month but not started. i have done a compression test and the readings are between 135 - 150 (thats if ive done it right).

150psi is about right for xr2 did you do test with WOT?? as long as gaskets havent rotted away then i can't see why it won't run,

not sure what you mean by (wot) sorry... i got hold of a compression tester (not the best make) and took all the plugs out and held the carbs wide open, spun it over with a new battery a few times on each cyclinder and took the highest reading. Im sure if i give it some gas it would fire up lol, my main worry is it failing when its on the water under load. ive rebuilt the trailer and its in having a retrim at the mo spent a stupid amount of money so thought why stop now!

i think at the very least it would need a new pump impeller as the exsisting one would be perished...also new gearbox oil would not hurt as well as new fuel pump rubbers,very little money and a sat mornings work would pay dividends to prevent a breakdown at sea

i was going to have it stripped down over the winter ready for next season as most of this year has been taken up on the trailer and saving for the retrim and new cover.i think il do what you say and give her a go just worried about the gaskets that one of the other guys said might have rotted
