need more speed!!!

speed tested my boat today for the first time since fitting my new powerhead, smooth/slight conditions. and to be honost was dissapointed.

im running an old shape ring 18 (the magician) with '98 XR2 200hp with offshore leg and standard box. using normal unleaded pre-mixed at 33-1
using a 26pitch drag prop and running just under 6000rpm
i have the motor jacked up on the transom so the bullet of the gearbox is vertually level with the V.
only hitting speeds of 55mph! and trimming up doesnt really make much difference, slows me down if anythin!
was hoping to be more like in the high 60's!!

any help or set up tips would be much appriciated

Hello Matey!

Is that one of the Yam props? I tried a 26 one of them on mine and it would only just touch on 50 knots at the limiter compared to 56 knots with a Laser 2 23 pitch...

What other props have you got?

Hi Martin,

Why dont you phone Dave Trotter Satellite Services And Supplies 253498
he owned and raced Magician before he had his P25

Most Rings seem happy with a Laser, a 26 sounds a bit big for your set up.
If you look up Phantom 25 raceboats on utube it shows the Guernsey nationals from the 80's and amongst the 25's is some good footage of your boat.
I will try to find the link for you.

yeah i spoke to dave trotter this morning an he gave me some helpful advice. and yes i have seen the video on youtube 'phantom raceboats' some great clips of my boat in its younger days.

i have found a chopper prop and a cleaver to try, as dave said its cuz the ass end of the magician is heavy and need to create some lift on the back.

might try dropping the motor back down the transom an inch so i can use more trim and see if that makes a difference.

cheers

should be getting more than that...ive got a big old heavy marshan 19 with a 200XR2 (earlly 90's) and with my high five(23p) its giving me 60mph at 7000 and with my chopper(23p) ime getting a shade under 70 at 6900..both with the nose 1" below and trimmed out to give an impressive rooster . make sure you aint got a bad pair of coils as i used to have which made mine flat as a witches tit

edit...looking at your 1st post it looks like you've over propped it a tad

good luck!! although a choppers tend to be better on rings as rings like to ride a bit bow up but at the end of the day its all down to testing and personal preferance, try as many props as you can before you buy one and let us know how it goes with the cleaver

Hi Raker 24 can be good all rounder,XR2 used to use them in OCR, but testing differant staff is the best thing before buying.

A raker will give you bow lift and a Cleaver the opposite, so the first thing you need to decide is what you need!
