New Project Boat

Hi All

Starting a new thread on the rebuild of this anonymous boat hull.
Won on ebay for silly cheap so decided to use it as a new promo for the custom interiors I specialise in.

Will be repainting hull, stripping out then adding custom interior etc.

Does anybody have any ideas on the make of hull???

Its just under 17 ft in length, deep V hull, bow tank, and the worse dated interior possible

Will upload some more photos as the work gets going.

New Project Boat

Thanks for that, are these boats any good?
Would have preferred a Phantom or Ring but it was too cheap so looked a good boat to transform.

Drivers 440/500/560 are all Ray Stapley designs.

I 'think' the 510 was a later boat, but ive never really looked to see if the hull was different to the 500

Which Engine

Hello All

Two questions I could do with some help with, Would a 250hp Johnson 2 stroke fitted on this boat be way over the top, or even sink it? Or would a 130hp v4 be more suitable.

Also would the boat need hydraulic steering with either of these engines

Thanks

Depends on your program but a light 2 stroke V6 150hp would be plenty already.
What does she weigh ?

Not sure of the weight, its pretty well built, with a big old solid transom. I take it the 250hp will be too heavy?

YES to the first and Most Probably to the second!!

Just a couple of points, the weight of the 250 HP Johnson is over 200kg this is probably over 30% of the boats total weight hang ing off the back of the transom. The longitudinal centre of gravity would be way out to start with.

The transom may appear thick probably multi layers of ply glassed in but unless it is sufficiently tied in to the rest of the hull structure with deep longitudinal knees would probably just pull the transom off the boat.

Then there is the minor issue of handling all that power in a short (16-17 foot) deep vee hull- some people may have got away with similar powers pulling a racing skier, (and some of our American cousins have shoe-horned unfeasibly powerful V8s into similar length boats but these have been very shallow vee hulls) but your power to weight ratio would be something around 400 BHP per ton,

-not bad for a large racing hull- possibly suicidal in this boat as ,if you could keep it together and in a straight line , with a big enough pitch prop you would probably be looking at speeds of 85 MPH plus.

I once put a 175 V6 merc on a 16 ' cat (hull weight 300 kg) - no major stability or torque problems because of the twin hulls but a scary ride that certainly focussed the attention!

Your boat would almost certainly swap ends and spin out with all that weight on the back unless of course you kept it at about 55 MPH.

In which case a 90 HP Yamaha or a 115 HP 4 stroke would do the same and cost a lot less. (But much less entertaining to watch!)http://boatmad.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

True, but most 115 4 strokes weigh close to 200kgs anyways. So I'd stick with a 2 stroke 90hp or a light 2 stroke V6.
I'm sure you could get the boat weighed somewhere or rent one of these.

Phil has a good point here as most 115 HP 4 strokes are 2 litre in- line 4 cyl units.

These may not refer to current models, but from my files; a comparison of weights are as follows;

(All dry weights for standard 20” legs)

Johnson Ocean-Pro V6 250 HP 2 stroke 205 Kg
Suzuki DF115 2 litre four stroke 186 kg
Mercury 2 litre V6 2 stroke (135 /150 HP) 173 kg
Evinrude Etec V4 115 170 Kg
Yamaha V4 2 stroke 115/140 162 kg
Suzuki DF90 1.5 litre 4 stroke 155kg
Evinrude Etec 90 HP 145 Kg
Yamaha 3 cyl 2 stroke 90 HP 118 kg

From a weight point of view the Yamaha 3 cyl 2 stroke 90 wins it by a mile , (and if well looked after a very reliable motor). I don’t think more power is really necessary, because then you have more weight, more fuel and only a small gain in performance as a result, but if a few more MPH were desired , a good Yamaha V4 115/130/140 could be an option?

If you wanted to go EPA/CARB the Etec 90 or Suzuki DF 90 also in the frame.

Evinrude

Etec 115 ho is around 170kg - Cracking engines and you'd prob be looking at 55-60 once the set up is sorted! Rumour has it they put out 130 hp

I'd have a chat with Keith Whittle at Powertech!
