New to boats need advice,,, plz
Hi all i'm Davey, I've always been interested in speed boats but never took the plunge,The boats that catch my eye are things like marshan 18, phantoms etc.maybe with a 150 hp outboard
I've started looking at buying a speed boat but not sure whether to buy a project or just buy a ready to go boat. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and feel that it would be enjoyable task and also a good learning base to buy bits and pieces and put a boat together, but on the other hand it seems at a glance that it is more cost effective to buy a boat ready to go. any advice ?

Hi Davey, there's alot of 2nd hand 18' Ring & Phantoms great for 150hp out there, so I wouldn't bother with a project if you lack experience

I would suggest you buy something ready to run. Don't worry, it WILL break soon enough giving you the chance to get you hands dirty!

Hi Davey
Was my boat - Ring 21 with XR2. Nice rig but did require a lot of maintenance.
Had a R18 with a V6 200 before that.
Got fed up with having to fix it all the time so now have a wellcraft with an volvo inboard. More sedate and less racey but less highly strung and much better for skiing and wakeboarding. Also much better on fuel!
Still requires quite a bit of maintenance But hey, thats boating for you.
In terms of insurance, do a search on here. I think a lot of the guys use a specialist (RA Carter) but you can just get liability insurance for less that £100 / year.
Ours is about £170 including fire, theft and transit.
Cheers and best of luck finding a good'un!
