Not so cheap?
I've been doing my sums for importing from the US. There are loads of really nice looking Formula boats on www.boattraderonline.com (well kept, freshwater use, rack stored) and a 292 SR1 of 1989 vintage with trailer could be had for about £14000. Then add survey (£300), shipping (£2000), Insurance (£700), Duty & Vat (also on shipping - £3200), then the damned RCD inspection, rectification & certification (£2300), then an emmissions test (because the engines are over 10 years old - £500 per engine = £1000. Also assuming the engines don't need replacing to pass the test), a noise test £350 and finally road transportation within the UK (because the trailer's illegal - £1500). Total now is approx. £25000.
Bollocks.

unless im mistaken, the 89 Formula falls outside the RCD due to its age?
Perhaps someone knows better.

Sadly not. I thought that too. To be exempt boats older than 1998 must have been completed and on the market in the European Economic Area or its affiliated countries, which does not include the USA.

You could of course have the boat plated as a raceboat, or completely ignore RCD if you plan on keeping the boat for a while. Certainly if you were a trader you'd need to follow RCD, but for a personal import until there is a compulsory registration scheme I'm not sure how it can be tracked.

Well i stand corrected on that one then.
Thanks Guys.
Whats the betting the bright spark who introduced the RCD is behind the money making scam of RCD boat compliance at Hamble?
Cynical i know but life gets you that way sometimes!

Yes I thought about ignoring it completely. The two concerns I have are 1) if someone from DTI started inspecting boats tied up at marinas (about as likely as England beating Ireland tomorrow!!!) or 2) if i had to claim on insurance for accident or injury the company could take great pleasure in royally reaming me. It all about risk management innit?

What if the boat was registered in The Isle of Man?
Just a thought.

That's all a cryin' shame. I've found a crackin' Formula in the States, that I was seriously considering trying to get over here.
Doh !

Hmm. Interesting point. The boat doesn't need to be registered anywhere. The IOM is not part of the EEA, nor are the Channel Islands (beware of boats bought from there). However Duty & VAT is payable at the first point of entry which would most likely be Southampton (not may boats between USA and Douglas!). However there is an exclusion to the RCD if the craft is visiting the EEA for the purposes of travel or tourism. Significantly the time scale is not defined. Then you have to apply for an exemption certificate (£150) But getting insurance to cover you again is the problem. You're also screwed if you want to sell it on.
