Don't want to reply to the above post - but the Gouliot Passage is something every powerboat racer has to go through!

Back in 1988 the Toleman Twins were coming through, and Mike Toleman backed off throttles to allow my little 3B boat through, cost me a few bottles of champers that night - (Mike knew that if I held my position I would be World Champion) He sacrificed his race for that.

RIP Gary Toleman

Replace the word passage with the word "Wall".
if you can get the word commitment in the same sentence that's quite applicable as well.
that said it is a great racing memory recall towering rock each side, wicked

It was a long day, The Toleman Twins "taped up" Dickie Davis and chucked him into the spa bath - the actress from "Howards Way" was not impressed - so we chucked her in with Dickie.

That was racing in the '80's -

P.S. Toleman picked up the bill in the morning.

25-27' is small for a cat but at 28' you can look at a 28' Douglas Marine Skater with twin outboards (300xs) will run 110 all day long.

All joking aside it very much what you prefer in the Mono Vs Cat debate.
IMHO cats excel in calm to average conditions, monos average to rough. Each has it's own domain. Where it gets fun is those days when neither has the advantage of conditions.
Super rough dont count as you really should be on dry land.

Tell me about these fatalities. (please don't say you mean Didier & Co, not really the kind/class of boat we mortals play in)

I know Bill Shakespeare was killed on Windermere in one of his boats, but don't know any details.

Fatalities in powerboat racing are fairly rare me thinks, even more so in the mono category, excepting Didier and the geezer in the buzzi rib in the UAE (never did trust them ribs!)

Everyone talks about the goolies passage like it's a 15' wide cut. now although I've only raced the one event in Guernsey, we passed through the passage at close to a ton in a 50 foot boat, and I don't remember it feeling particularly tight to me. I must be missing summat.

It's not that the passage is tight loads of room, just quite senic, depending on the state of tide & prevaling you get a bit of a drop in water level hence the Stigma & Myth. UK boys play on that for the worlds
Chances are you wouldn't notice it in a 50 footer.

The P1 race in Travemünde, Germany, had a fatality, i believe it was Sergio Carpentieri

Havent been through Gouliot Passage since last summer and never at speed. Can be a bit choppy as theres a lot of water rushing back and forth there. the major concern for me is the wall of rocks that juts out from half goslin bay slightly obstruction the passage. The tallest being the end one out at i think 8.8m above chart datam (tides round here can cover it, just!). Go through it at low water and theres a strike mark the other side. Would hate to be a navigator racing through there. Maybe i'm a bit paranoid.

I'll take a pic or vid next time i go through there.

Back to cats, there are a lot of overfalls round here and they can make life hell. Many times i've tried to get to sark and it's just been hell. Turned round and thought bugger this i need a bigger boat. Always the front that slams as i come off these peaked endless waves. Am curious to know how a cat would fare?

Weird one. They ran over the back of a boat and this in turn made their boat barrel roll and the occupants were ejected and .....

Between The Rocks

Back in the early 70`s ,Shell Oils who were one of Unowot`s sponsors were mad keen on Don taking the boat at full chat betwen the gaps in the Needles rocks for a TV ad,but to his credit, a OP1 splattered over the Needles is the last thing the sport needed even though it would interesting to see it zoom through.

I believe his heart attack and almost instant death as a result, was what caused the collision. He was dead before they hit Fainplast. It wasn't the accident that caused the death, but the other way round.

Tommy Sopworth did it for a TV commercial that was aired. think that was in Miss Enfield 2

They never explained that. It appeared as though the roll over caused the death.

The DW boats seem to have a problem when they go over. The cockpit crushes and caves in. Has happened 3-4 times I've heard.

They are pretty much the only boat in that ever shrinking class.

Fast though.

Wot Passage

The `Greenhouse` enters the passage complete with JF having a good yawn and combing his hair in the VIP bolster in the rear.

Nice shot Graham, but unfortunately that one is from before my time with the team. It still has the full height greenhouse on it there, I was in it after the reduction in height (which I did) as in this fine pic from your gallery. (which BTW is wrongly dated, it says 1990, but I did the alterations in '91, just prior to the Cowes race of that year)

I think that if you take the actual greenhouse out of the deal, the hull has a lovely profile.

Twoz a ferkin big bote!

Been through the guilliot passage - great fun and the speed makes it feel a bit tighter than it is, there was a little step down on the way through and the boat felt as if it was moving around underneath us I assume due to the disturbed water, definitely memorable but not dangerous at all when I was there (2006).
