offshore cat?

Do you think a cat would be any good round Guernsey? Or are they just a flat day boat and i should stick to monohulls? I'd be looking around the 25-27ft.

With light monohulls i've noticed that they are arse heavy and generally the light bow lifts when cutting through wake.

On vids of cats running with mono's the nose doesn't bounse just slices, i guess because the arse is make light by the cushon of air and trim etc. They look more comfortable,

I've never been in one but have read; they are more economic and faster in general cos of less drag but...

On the down side won't corner as fast and cant handle big sees anywhere near as well.

As far as i know there are no fast cats in guernsey just mono's? Always wanted to try one though and find out for my self.

Actually, you may know the answer to this: How many times did Peter turn round and head back to the marina, before he'd even reached the muster area? I saw it a good few times, when there was a > 0.5 metre wave height.

Sprint cats are great (I have been / raced in a couple), but when it's proper rough, ..no thanks.

Whatever happened to 'Guernsey Skater'?

In fairness to Peter - he probably raced for a good few years past his "sell by" date.

He ran a cat from '82 - '03 and when "needs must", pushed his cat through some horrible seas, I am sure Ian Cutler for one will remember.

Don't forget that back in the days when you were racing, he was also competeting in Guernsey national races, as well as european and world events, so his "shall I race today" was also based on fiscal reasons.

I would conclude that the UK most successful racers Curtis, Holmes and Little have all used multi hulls to gain their wins!

As for the Skater Cat - pehaps the webmaster of the 3c worlds site can give more info?

The cats have been very succesful, thats troo.
However, for the last 15-20 years, UK racing, has on the whole been governed as a cat series, ie, if it's a bit rough for the cats, they cancel.

Mid 90's and the B28 was a good match for the 4L cats in all but the calmest conditions.

Don't get me wrong, I love the cats too, but when the wind blows hard, they do catch the breeze in a scarey way, at least it scares me, but I suppose I'm a pussey.

Do agree, but I would wouldn't swap the few bruises of rolling over a cat for your osteopath bill at the end of the RB08!

A quick review of the Victory team crash identifies that as bollox! Better a visit to the osteo than the morgue.

I thought the osteo was inevitable (already booked in?). Constant deadrise, etc etc.

Having witnessed monohull fatalities with my own eyes some years before you held your first racing licence I would suggest "bollox" applies to your post and not mine.

Cats V Monos

If your`e talking Guernsey Worlds,I would have thought a cat is favourite especially as there is a high chance of flat conditions with the races run mid morning.Although Batboats seem to be the UK choice at present,it`s probably because that`s all there is out there in the monohull fleet to really give a cat challenge. In the past whether a Wright or a Cougar ,in the right hands they would usually beat a mono, and if a builder/designer comes up with a winning boat then that will be the flavour at the time. Can`t imagine if James Beard was still alive the Batboats would be winning a lot of the races. In the sixties Double M monos were ousted by Avengers monos, then Cougar cats, then Phantom monos, then Hicks cats, then Batboat monos. So it goes back and forth dependant on who is commerically capable of maintaining a winning design at the time.At present either a Scandinavan/Italian cat owner seems to be coming out on top of the pile, short of consistently having to run in lumpy conditions, although I bet it wouldn`t bother the likes of Neil Holmes .

So I didn't have to wait 40 days and 40 nights on the Sinai mountain to have the "powerboat racing God of knowledge" to reply to this post!

Makes a change, because normaly the owner of this site gets his acolytes to post up! - and then we start talking about Sittingbourne, London Road etc.

Guernsey Alternative

In order to avoid any unnecessary friction between Sittingbourne and the rest of the world, perhaps an alternative craft (see attachment) would be suitable, subject to it being able to squeeze through the Gouliot Passage.

I think the raise of minimum weight was an effort to slow the ultra quick cats down for sure, but not to equalize them with the slugs, more to keep the ocupants alive a little longer. ...go figure, or as you would say, QED.

I'm looking forward to you showing us all how it's done in the Campbell/Midas

Superb boat and more power than you poke a stick at. What could possibly go wrong?

Ciao, step back from the wine glass.
