Funeral
Straight after the arrangements were announced, all the reservation lines in St. Austell lit up. Premier Inn and Travelodge were the first to go.
Richard Mason lives there and has attempted to reserve rooms but, it seems that almost all but the most expensive (Carlyon Bay Hotel at £280 a night have gone).
Camping or campers might still be an option at Pentewan Sands, otherwise it's make your own arrangements, unfortunately. Charlestown is a small place and the congregation is expected to be large.

Words are inadequate to describe yesterday, I am absolutely certain that Ian would have been shocked and flattered to see so many people turn up - there was no room for all of the people at the crematorium with many left outside to listen over a loud speaker - Peter Butler told a story of how Ian's helmet got ripped off battling for the National Championship with Derek Basham in Gibraltar. There were flowers from Boatmad that looked fantastic.
People came from all over the country including what must have been the whole of the "Birmingham Navy", there were people there who haven't been around for well over a decade, and when I left with Derek at around 8pm it looked like everyone was settling in to give him the send off that only he deserved. Derek and I got to 15 National Champions and who knows how many record holders before we gave up - Gone but certainly will never be forgotten by anybody there yesterday and many more.

That race and it's video, for me, show the absolute metal of the man.
I still regularly show that video to racers, and non boaters alike, because I like to think it portrays exactly what powerboating, and powerboat racers are all about! Some outstanding driving (By both Ian & Derek) and a show of determination and grit that I could only ever hope to have. What a bloody tough fella.
Ian will continue to be an inspiration to me, and I would imagine to many others.... A sad farewell.
Lets take a look at that footage and remind ourselves why the forum is awash with tributes to the man & the driver and the funeral turnout was so over whelming.
My favourite racing footage.

When the vicar done the reading, I think it was Mark>????..., about being in a boat on Gallilie in a storm, and his diciples thought they were going to drown, all I saw was that f--ing phantom with Ian at the wheel gliding by them for the win. It made me chuckle....
