When I did my CPC in Road Haulage you were allowed upto 16.5m on a semi Trailer and Tractor unit (Artic) and upto 18.65m Wagon & Drag (Drawbar).
You were also allowed upto 60% of the wheelbase as overhang. I know laws change and I know of 2 major Haulage companies within the UK that are experimenting with longer semi trailers with the consent of VOSA. They still have to remain within the 44,000Kg for 6 axles but are allowed upto 18.65m total length.
As for the trailer brakes anything over 3500kg must have close coupled brakes (air brakes) and AFAIK you are meant to have Jaw and Pin type coupling over 3500Kg not a 50mm Ball.
Graham.
