Outboard Engine Horse Power Testing
you know you can test the horse power of your motorbike by putting it on a dyno, well is there anything you can do to test the horse-power of your boats outboard engine?
i have an XR2 and they say they are 200 horse power, and id be interested to see exactly how what the horse power it is right now
the compression is equal and very high on all six - but id like to know the exact horse power she is..
any ideas?

Hydraulic, water brake and eddy current all have their pro's and cons. I find eddy current gives the best overall control and flexibility to me but I'm from an automotive background and so don't have lots of water everywhere to mix with high current electricity.
I've never seen it but have heard horror stories about hydraulic systems letting go and lubing up vast areas of workshop.
You could even build an inertia type dyno if you're simply using it for power runs, much more repeatable when on a low budget and less complicated. Never seen anyone implement it in a marine environment though.
