outboard needed.

looking for a 200-300hp outboard. either yamaha, mercury or honda. i am willing to spend up to £3000. my current engine is annoying me so have decided to get rid of it and get a new one. also how much would a 1990 mercury blackmax be worth? (please note that it cuts off after about 20 mins) sounds fuel related but had enough.

1500-2k I guess if nothing major is wrong with it / depending on condition.

Might wanna beef up your transom if you put a much heavier lump on it. Just a suggestion cos based on experience, the R21C does not have transom knees...

Have you tried changing the stator? Doubt it's fuel sounds like ignition is breaking down after its warmed up.

I know it's not what was originally asked for, but got a Yam 90 long shaft available, (with a box of spare bits)
sensible offers above the £1500 mark

I pre-mix the 2 stroke at 50 to 1. I have changed the air filter and made no difference. Also, I would like a minimum of a 175 hp.

I'm not sure what the pre mix ratio is but at different rpm you can be running to rich or to lean I was going to pre mix my merc 200 but got told this so I've left it I would say most of the older mercs that people pre mix over heat. There's a merc optimax 200 on boatsandoutboards for sale or post your wanted advert in the forsale section on here I'm sure you'll find something

I had a 200hp Opti on the back of a R21c a few summers back. I thought it made a really good combination for pleasure use - quiet running on tick over, great fuel economy, and bags of torque, never struggled to get on the plane and would do a genuine 50 knots 4 up with all our beach gear (58 knots was the fastest I saw IIRC). The boat was anti-fouled and a pleasure set up with full seats/cusions.

Cant comment on the condition of the engine on B&O but I would recommend the model for sure.

I have an R21c with a 200Opti running a 23 laser II. pretty much as stated above, it goes very well although the centre of gravity moved a lot further back (since i changed from a Black Max) which makes me look like a complete amateur when trying to reverse.

Other thing that happened was fuel consumption was halved - which didn't actually save me anythign as it just meant I went twice as far!

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I have with the Optimax/R21C is running the control cables. The hole in the rear of the deck has to be huge to get any sort of trim and tilt and any turning angles on the engine without fouling/damaging the cables.

Fuel is of no issue to me or the reversing but all that matters to me is the speed and how quickly it gets up onto the plane and also the reliability of the engine.

Wrong shaft length, you need an "L"
