If that picture is of your engine then that ain't no XR2. Looks like a 200 saddle and leg. Check out the exhaust tuner section you can see where the standard clamshell cowl seal was. It's not got a genuine XR2 gearcase, and if it's 2.4 it needs to lose a bit of bore size.

A few more pictures would be handy if you have any. Let's see under the cowl and a good look at the saddle. It looks like its on rubber mounts. A guess would be a 200 Black Max. The drilled leg points to the north Blackpool / Newcastle has the inner liner been taken out ? It could be anything.

i did think the cowl was nothing to do with engine,there is no serial number plate so here are the numbers i could find on the engine
stamped on the cylinder head is 96531.
on the carbs is wh22-1
just below flywheel is ob34218000.
on the engine mount is ob314218
and on the leg is 1590-8334.
no more pictures at the moment.

If it really is a 2.4 and those WH22's are the original carbs its most likely an early 80's 200.

Is the block painted?
