P1 + 250ho

How fast do the new P1s go with a 250HO behind them? And what about the older Cougar 27s? I think Cougar put one on the back of their own boat so hopefully somebody has figures...

Dunno, but you can figure that it's at least 5mph slower than they'll tell you, roll on Coniston!!!!

Yeah i remember going to the boat show when the cougars were unveiled and they were teling me the boat on display had done 80mph with steve curtis at the wheel, i did politely point out that the boat hade never been in the water as there were all wood shavings etc where it had just been finished for the show
By the time i finished talking to the 'people in the know' we were down to 65 mph.

So what do you guys reckon a Cougar 27 would do with a 250 high output on the back? I'd hope more than 65!

And if the 27 is really that slow... what racing hull would you recommend for the 250ho?

Cougar With 225 Come The End Was Running At 68 Top,

Run A Lot Better And Level With Ho On Cougar Also A Little Quicker,

In Plymouth Last Week Spoke To A Few Old Frends Now With New P1s Boat Now 64 Top In Flat.

Having driven a 28 I can tell you I did get to 67mph, and that seems to be around the top end

If it helps this conversation along – I was told by those in the know the cougar recorded 76 with the HO on the back and that was without any prop development. I think that makes it a far quicker hull than the 28 that had lots of prop development and then had to be fitted with a lifter to jack the engine up before it could achieve its best.

For the record the fasted known speed for the Cougar is 84 (I know this because I was driving it). But this was with a Mercury 300XS with a lifter and a Mercury Lightning ET Prop. I am told it later achieved 86/87 with a different prop but then threw both driver and navigator out....!

Which one corners faster? I would expect the 28 to be faster in the turns but I am told they don’t corner very well either.

Thanks! Any ideas as to what the 27 would run like with a proper prop? How did you like it with the HO on it?

Can't really answer that as I didn't get to drive it. All I know is that it handled better and it was faster. The boys at Cougar will have the answer as they fitted and tested it and then shipped abroad. Don't know what props they fitted either.

Err slight update on those speeds. The 300XS now has Coated piston skirts and ceramic tops, ported heads, new PCM and aparently much more. It now exhausts through a 15'' mid section which has lowered the COG and improved the handle. All ads up to 375hp and 90mph with a litttle more to come...!

Do you have some pictures of the engine?

I wonder if you were able to lower the weight of the engine by switching to a 15" mid?

Think I have attached a photo...if not will try again. Yes the COG was lowered by !5'' mid, Well that's what the owner believes & I have no reason to doubt him.

I wonder if it's lighter now with the 15" setup?

Or is the 15" mid heavier than the 20"?

What cowls do you use? Those of a 300x or 300xs?

Top speed eventually touched 67mph.
Around race circuit flicked 64 @ 5700rpm at end of straights.

Yes that's the one. It was originally raced by Negotiator in the Honda series before I owned it. I didn't race it myself but did race another 225 but along with the majority of the fleet was hopelessly off the place by at least 4mph. Anyway Kurt purchased the hull from me and transformed it into what you see in the photo. The 15'' mid section and other mods were added this year. The boat isn't actually any lighter than the Honda package due to an extra fuel tank, trim tabs and lifter but it is better balanced.
