Hi Josh
2k paint is a good all rounder for a hull.
If sprayed and prepped correctly it can look mint.
Best bet is upload some photos and more details on the project and I might be able to help and advise you,or get some one in the trade to have a look.
John

Paint
2K is good. Just painted a boat in HMG industrial 2K which is very cheap compared to so called 'marine' paints and gave the same finish for half the price.
Rememeber to wear a good air fed mask though as 2K contains isocyanides and is deadly without a mask.
Pm me and I can give you the HMG code we used and prep method

Can get pretty good results with International toplac by roll and tip. Follow the instructions in the international painting guide. Do it on a warm day too, the paint will flow a lot better. And if you keep the paint warm before use, it helps.
Ive seen this done to a level that would match any spray job, but Ive never managed it!

Is your boat goane be in the water all the time or are you goane trailer it every time you go out ?
Most 2k paints don't like to be wet for longer periods of time .

Paint
I'm just about to paint my ring 20 it's been sanded to 180 grit to take a couple of coats of jotun HB epoxy primer and then it will flatted back with 320grit ready to take a. couple of topcoats. My problem is jotun do a topcoat but it is in there commercial range and I'm not sure if it will be glossy enough but it's only £70 for 5 litres which is really cheap compared to buying hemple ocean gloss which Is £120 for 2.5 litres. So I'm looking for some advice on top coats?

Painting
I agree with OCRDA, 2k Automotive paint will totally out live the boat if applied correctly.
They are super glossy and super hard wearing and dont cost the earth unless you start geting into fancy base coats and lacquer which can start mounting the pennies up.
As for the cheap spray units I wouldnt waste your money.
A proper spray gun (i.e) a good quality gravity fed spray gun and a compressor will give far better results.
Look at this
http://www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/pro...oducts_id=6852
I would then search ebay or similar for a devilbiss or iwata paintgun.
I bought a devilbiss gti pro gravity gun on there a couple of weeks ago for just under £70 second hand.
By the time you have bought a cheap spray system and watched the paint splatter out of the end you'll wish you had just bought a proper gun.
Hope this helps

Agreed, I tried an airless gun on a boat years ago, it was ok I suppose but doubt Id have gotten a worse finish with a roller to be honest!
There is another option, you could re-gelcoat the boat. Prep with 80 grit, roll on 3 or 4 coats of gel. Grade sand it and polish it. Will give the best results with limited resources and will have a very tough & durable finish. But without a decent compressor and sander will be a lot of work.
Buy a half decent spray gun and Im sure you can borrow/hire a compressor to do the job. Paint with 2 pack polyurathane. Easiest by far!

There's a guy in Cobbs, Max, who paints awlgrip with a brush, you'd swear it was sprayed, most amazing finish ever.

I have done this. The amount of work to make it look good is a killer. Won't be doing that again - paint for me, from now on.

Ive done quite a few boats this way, its more work but finish is amazing and I usually try and push guys towards re-gel over spray job. Cost is about 25% more than painting but worth every penny in my opinion.
But it certainly helps to spray the gel rather than rolling it.

2 pack paint. hire a compressor and gun/ or buy a gun.paint the hull in standard 2 pack but add approx 2% plasta.ciser to the deck. it gives the paint flexibilty and stops it cracking

i think u will be surprised on a price if you take your boat to a paint shop you could get it done for £350 top job, i have painted over 20 boats and i would say 2k buy a compressor of the bay biggest air res tank u can find you should find one for around £100, buy a gun very cheap, of u go, i always put a cheap miss match white down leave it for a couple of days then light sand back then 3 coats of you colour with a 10/15 min gap between coats then finish with 2 coats of clear laquer this will get rid of orange peel and make it shine it will look stunning apply laquer 10/15 mins after paint, after 3 days your paint will be rock hard and never chip of amazing , good luck, dust is your worst enemy tat wrags cheap and do the job, good luck
