Paintshop?

Does anyone know of a decent boat paintshop in the Devon/Cornwall area that can do a respray, and whats the likely cost?

Why

Is there a particular reason you want to spray it. Sorry but painting a GRP boat, "if it is GRP", is a pet hate of mine. I only ever paint a boat as a total and utter last resort. You would be amazed what compound and elbow grease or even better a buffer can do!

Sorry, just my opinion.

If you do want to change the colour, re-gelcoat. It's tougher than paint and easy to repair when you ding it.

When I said paintshop, I did`nt actually mean paint as in the stuff you put on with a brush. I did mean to get it done properly ie gel coat and all. The reason being in a couple of spots the finish is a little faded and for all the polishing I cant get the gleam back.

Clear-coat

Wipe the boat with a wet sponge, this will show you what your preasent colour would look like if you have it clear-coated. Is this what you meant?

Yeh, thats pretty much what I mean. Its just that in a couple of spots the boats is let down by the finish. So just by re-applying gel coat are you saying that this will bring the finish/gleam back?

Have a word with Cookee from Banana Shark Racing hes from Salcombe not far from you and a few guys that had phantoms down there had been respaired with some sort of flexible paint /gelcoat. Alternatively give Steve a call from Reddish Marine
http://www.reddish-marine.co.uk They race prepared our new phantom 16 and he knows a guy in Devon that does it.

Gel-Coat

Not quite, when I said re gel the boat I meant you would have to rub the whole boat down, to its original gelcoat if it is painted already. Then have the boat sprayed with gelcoat, then it would have to be rubbed down again and buffed heavily. It's quite a process and only if your original gelcoat is totalled.

Sorry I'm a little lost, is your boat painted or is it still a gelcoat finish on it?

If it has been painted it would be easier to repaint than strip and polish the gelcoat. But if it is still gelcoat it should come up with a rub of 1000 paper and compound. Or you can clear-coat the gelcoat to bring back the shine.

Silversurfer,
To be honest I never went any further, due to a new prop and a few repairs! Although I did get a number for a company called GRP Services, Plymouth 01752 703930 or 07773781997, chaps name is Paul, but as I said I havent spoke to them. Are you thinking of getting the phantom done? If so let me know how you get on.

Have you got their number / address Chaos?

BTW: My brother was telling me about an article in the sun newspaper the other day regarding Police hunting a guy who had just brought a Phantom 21 in the Essex / Kent area. The guy is suspected of using the boat for drug smuggling. Made me think of you chaos! (I wont tell!).

Anyway intrigued by this I went off in search of the story. A copy of which is below.

Edition 3GMD MON 05 JUL 2004, Page 18
Pair 'murdered on Channel drug run';Exclusive
IAN HEPBURN IN DE PANNE, BELGIUM

TWO suspected drug smugglers may have been murdered on a trip to
Europe, a Sun investigation has found.
Tony Dugdale, 43, and Richard Patwell, 42 -who have criminal records
-told relatives they were on a "fishing trip."
They took a car towing a powerful speedboat on a Channel ferry to
France and haven't been seen since.
Police launched an air and sea search fearing the pair had been hit
by a ferry trying to come back across the Channel. But no debris or
bodies were found.
Dugdale's red Mercedes estate has since been found abandoned by a
wood in De Panne, Belgium, near the French border.
Cops suspect the pair may have been killed for their cash.
The 21ft Phantom boat is also missing. It was bought by Dugdale, of
Dartford, Kent, in a false name for Pounds 8,000 four days before the
trip. A senior National Crime Squad source said: "This whole case
stinks. These men clearly travelled to buy a commodity. Heroin is
most likely. People with cash for this are big targets."
Another Pounds 20,000 rigid inflatable boat owned by Dugdale and a
Mitsubishi 4x4 owned by Patwell, of Alloa, Scotland, are also missing.
* IF you have information on the pair ring the police on 020 8721
3557 or The Sun on 020 7782 4105.

NO wonder you can afford a new one! Your secrets safe with us mate

Have u got her on the water yet?

I think that you are supposed to try the buff method first. If all else fails respray. Bit concerned about the bottom of the boat though as I trailer launch each and every time I dont think the finish would last very long on the bottom!
