Phantom 16

Hello all,

could you tell me what the ideal hp outboard is for a phantom 16? i think its around the 90hp mark, but it would be nice to have some comformation on it.

Also i think the boat may need a new floor. does anyone know what wood i would need and do i have to coat it in GRP first. also would i have to bond it to the stringers?

Are the fuel tank typicaly at the back of the boat?

90 hp should be fine
i used to race 16ft phantom racedeck with an 85 hp yam in f4 skiracing it would pull about 60mph with skier
fuel tank was set at the rear under the well

It would originally have been Gaboon marine ply, probably 3/8" / 9mm, but possible 1/2" / 12mm.

It would have been primed/sealed with G4, then laminated (within the appropriate time period for the G4) with a single 450g chopped strand mat on both sides before fitment. edges where bonding paste, or matt was gonna go would be sanded for keying.

it would be set into Crestomer 1186pa bonding paste (originally this would have been 'Freefix' bonding paste) within the longitudinals and laminated in (across floor and up longit) with 2 or 3 layers of 450.

that would be good if you could, do they pull a skier ok? would i have mount the engine low to help get up and go? i have heard that the little phantoms stuggle to get on the plane with a skier somtimes?

Is yours a race or a ski deck? 4 seats or 1 behind other?
Completely different charecteristics of each.

If your using the boat for skiing then you'll be wanting something like a 19/20 pitch prop. Nothing too vicious otherwise you'll have a wrestle on your hands.
Prop shaft mount a couple inches below the boat will be ok.

we never had a problem pulling skier out of the water

it depends on what you want to get out of it, and of courrse which make of prop it, is but around a 20" should be ok, 19 for a quicker pull out
Engine hieght also depends on which prop too but some where about 3" below would be a good starting point
