Phantom 16

Thinking of maybe buying a Phantom 16 in the autumn to replace my aging Plancraft Stingray.

Don't seem to come across many discussions on this board about them as it seems to concentrate on the 21/23s etc.

Can anyone give some experience as to what they are like and if worth getting and if so what I should be looking for when I go to look at prospective boats?

PS Also any advice on Ring 16s greatly appreciated although they seem to be more expensive than Phantoms (is this an age thing?)

Agis, the price is not likely to be an age thing.

I like the 16's and have seen some with silly hp. I reckon buy an 18.... its reckoned to be a better boat.

silver surfer on this forum could tell you more. I think he (or friend) has a 16 with a 100hp V4 suzuki.

If you do opt for a ring, buy the 18 its much nicer than any of the various 16's

Also 18's will give you a better range of power options. Most 16's will not be much faster over 90hp anyways.
An xr2 & 18 would be a killer combo.

All depends what power you want to go with - but the Phantom 16 is a fantastic and often un-appreciated boat. Does not quite have the looks of the larger Phantoms but does all you ask of it.

My first ever raceboat was a 16 and is probably the best handling / most forgiving boat I have driven (foot for foot) and that covers a lot of makes / models.

Many thanks for your replies guys much appreciated. Will have a look at the 18s as I must admit they look better than the rather stumpy 16s.

What would be the best power output for one of these (i am not after the max hp possible but rather the engine which would give the best balance between speed/drivability)

Would something like a Suzuki 140 or Yam 150 be OK or too much?

Cheers Adam. Are you the Adam from K4? If so you supplied my fire extinguisher. Haven't had to use it so far luckily but a very nice bit of kit...thanks.

Glad you are pleased with it - and hope it is one of those purchases you never need to use.

Planning some big changes and updates to the website, probably once we have finished our racing for the season and a bit more time becomes available.

I wouldnt want to put a heavy V6 on a 16. I'd have thought 115/130 yam V4 (a la OCR) would be a cracking boat.

we race P16s with a 60 fourstroke, not bad for 45-50mph!!!

If you go for a 16' get a Yam 90 on it.
OCR "B Class" run them, best power to weight ratio.
At Ramsgate last weekend they were pushing 60mph.
You'll have to play around with prop's, but that's the same with any set-up.
If you have the time, visit Whitstable 3-4 Sept, OCR are racing, talk to the lads / lassies who have them. There'll be 16's 18's & 19's running for you to compare.

Many thanks for all your advice. I much prefer the look of the Phantom 18 but for a practical point of view (fitting in the garage etc) think I will have to go for a 16.

I may well come down to see the OCR to see what they go like with a 90 on as I think that could be the way to go.

Phantom 16 - Great boat if well set up.
Do not have a big fuel tank in the back (As Mr Baker recommended to us) – spread the weight through the hull.
Put all the weight (i.e. battery etc. on the right hand side.) Boat should look pissed when moored up.
Get a big bow tank (20 gallons) - yep seriously.
Get a Rolla 4 bladed prop. (Quote Brian Eastham) (Dear but worth it)
You will run at 56 mph, get through the rough, and have a Kiddie of a boat.
