Oh well, back on with the hunt. Now, when does that Fletcher end again?......
I don't recon you'll get the adrenaline flowing in a Fletcher, especially with an inboard!
It's early days on the boating hunt (in so much as it's a buyers market) this tjme of year!
Hold ya horses & go for what you really want.

True, there may be some interesting things cropping up over the winter.

The Fletcher is pretty nice for pottering around, but it's not Phantom territory, as you say.

Having said that, if the Phantom people get back to me with a tempting buy-it-now I may well still be open to suggestions.

I could do, but to be honest I'd rather pay a bit more and get something nicer.

If this was stupidly cheap, like 1500 or so I'd bite their arm off, but I reckon I'd probably spend at the very least another grand in tidying and sorting. The trailer looked like it was more rust than metal too (although this is probably just me being super-picky. What do you want for two grand??) so there's another few hundred gone in a season or two.

Better to buy one that someone else has blown all their money on!

We'll see what happens.

Looks like a trader sale, very carefully worded description, that's the odd £500 bit at least!
Looks pretty good in the picture, worth a vist.
Anybody who's going to look better take Mike K, he's the Transom expert.

Does this mean then that your able & willing to do a short survey of "said" craft?
Be nice won't it, just think, these boats are all over the country as are the 'peeps' here.
If someone is local(ish) and they could give it a quick eye-over it may save long journey for the prospective buyer.
No come-backs, either "IMHO it's a pile of shite because ,,,,," or "IMHO it ain't bad, maybe worth a visit".

Just a thought 'peeps'

Hi Wayne
Thats a real good idea, if we all agreed a set radius to cover and have a general shortlist of what to look for and grade, boatmad would be on a winner, A charge could be made for newbies just dropping by so that the system is not abused

That's an excellent idea.

I for one would be more than happy to pay someone a few beers for their 'humble opinion' just as I'd be happy to give my opinion on anything I know about to any of my pals on here.

Why don't we make a £10 donation to the RNLI via PayPal as a 'cover charge' to avoid running into legal problems like tax and the like?

This is an idea that should be seriously thought about. 'Mate's mini surveys' with opinions given amongst members with 'off the record' no-comebacks recommendations.

Good one Dude.

sounds like a good idea, but i for one wouldnt like to say a boats good and due to my lack of knowlege have it turn out to be a dog,i think if you gonna spend 2 k upwards you owe it to yourself to veiw it yourself, think about this, would you buy a car 200 miles away because i said it looks good and starts????

the ideas worth more talking about though.

Hi Jamie
I think you maybe missed the point on this one, a members view is only an apraisal, it is up to the buyer to go and finalize the deal. The idea being it saves a lot of time and travel expense. Burnett - The RNLI donation from Boatmad for fees is a real nice touch nice one, I would lye down and die for those guys, they are my chosen charity. Count me in!

I see where you're coming from Dude, but no-one would hold anyone personally liable for this. Imagine this scenario:

You live in Brighton, right? You've decided that you want a car. You don't want any of the pink Vitaras you've seen locally (Fnar fnar!) and you see a Mercedes in the Auto Trader in Hertfordshire, which is about 120 miles away.

'I know. I'll call Burnett. He's had a few of these and he lives nearby'

I pop round after work and take a look at it. Two scenarios:

1: It's some pimped-up sack of crap with 'magic tree' hanging from the mirror and rust poking through the fibreglass flared arches. I'd message you and say 'save your petrol pal, it's crap.'

2: It's owned by a retired bloke, it has all the paperwork and looks mint. I'd say 'Looks good to me, here's the reg so do an HPI on it if you wish. By the way, the exhaust looks a bit rusty but it'll probably be okay'

You decide to take a look at it, the HPI checks out. You tap the exhaust knowingly and haggle a couple of hundred off the price. Ultimately, the decision is yours, but you'd be going in armed with the opinion of someone who's got no vested interest in it and can look at it purely objectively.

Now, translate all that to boats and imagine the possibilities!

I just got a reply back from the ex-owner of 'Goldeneye' Phantom 19EXL. Turns out he sold it privately after it didn't reach the reserve on Ebay. Bugger.

I was hoping it was still in his barn and I could persuade him to sell it to me.

Oh well. Can you believe that Scarab 28 only went £5,700??? If I had somewhere to keep it I'd have had that. What a machine!
Then again, we don't know what the reserve was set at.
