Lightbulb Phantom 16 and XR2 Merc

Just spotted this on ebay, the link probably won't work so search for Phantom 16 Speedboat.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHANTOM-16-SPE...temZ4590532568

Its got a 150HP XR2 on it, is this over powered? I always thought the 90 Yam was the engine to have. The buy it now price is cheap.

Cheers

Alex

I wondered whether someone would spot this! I'm actually off to look at it in the morning. We'll see what it's like...

Sounds like it'd be a good first boat with plenty of grunt and easy maintenance.

I'm tempted just to buy it now, but the pics don't really show much detail so I'll pop down and take a look first.

Watch this space, as they say.

May well do that. It'll be an early start for me tomorrow!

I'll be extra careful to have a good look at the transom as well Mike!

Sorry to hear about that. I'd pretty much agreed with Stewart to have that for five grand once the engine work had been done too. Seems it was worse than he (or anyone) thought.

Oh well.

This was the other contender. Not quite a Phantom, but good all-round piece of kit from what I can see.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Never really been sure about inboards, but this looks such a tidy example that I could be tempted. Good, trailerable day boat and still quick enough for a bit of good fun. Probably better on fuel that the XR2 as well, although that's not really a major issue. It's not like I'll be commuting in it or anything.

Will be interesting to see what it reaches at the end of the auction.

I quite like the colour scheme myself, but then I am an old git! Subtle and understated. I'll re-trim the interior in white with carpets that match the blue sides of the hull if I buy it. Also change the cowl for one of Gav's too. Should bring it up to date a little without blowing fortunes.

It'll also have a fixing for my GPS, and a set of speakers with an amp under the dash that I can attach my MP3 player too via a socket on the dash. Gotta be done!

One step up from a RIB? I thought that Fletcher looked quite tasty, as they go. Clean looking lump he's fitted in there too.

Of course, if I had the money for marina fees, then this would be the absolute dog's!

Look like a real-life drug smuggler for the price of a tedious car.

I bet that guzzles it! Worth it for the sound though I expect. That Fletchers not that bad, alot of boat for the money, and a mint engine. Just can't see it being as much fun as a phantom/ring etc, prob better if you have family or take the mother in law out though!!

Sorry dude, I didn't mean to imply that you were knocking the colour. My bad if it came across that way.
I was just saying that I prefer the more subtle scheme on this to the lairy 'Look at me!' paint I've seen on some.

As this'll be my first boat I don't want to draw too much attention to myself with an 'offshore racer' scheme when I'm struggling to haul the bugger back onto the trailer!

That's a good point actually. Better get a towbar fitted to the old Panzer. I know diddly about towing, but I'm sure my Merc 300E can haul it easily enough.

Cheers pal!

Just been trying to call the guy to sort out a convenient time, but it keeps going to voicemail.

Hope my lack of knowledge doesn't show too much when I go to view it.

The pointy end does go at the front, doesn't it?

If its a good all round boat you want then the fletcher will be hard to beat at 4K she is not out of the road if the description is accurate.

But then again I am Bias

Yup, I had one of these as Mike K said.
It was very quick, but you needed lighting reactions to stop it tripping up.
I started with a slightly smaller engine on it, then after a few years went for the 2ltr job.
Not an ideal starter boat IMHO but if you do go for it, first time out make sure the water is flat calm and take it very easy, because you are gunna scare the shite out of youself!

One other word of wisdom, if you want anybody to ride in it again, don't take them out your first couple of times.
You have been WARNED !!!!

I wouldn't have thought a 16 with an XR2 would be any more overpowered than say an 18 or a 20 with a mega tuned 2.5EFI

Well, I got up at 5 this morning and drove down to take a look at it.

Turns out it's 1990 manufacture. Looks original, no paintwork, etc.
Little bit tatty inside, trim gauge broken, some damage to the seating, etc. but then for the price that's all fair enough.

It started okay (apart from the usual 2 stroke smokiness of course) and settled down to a smooth (if noisy) idle. I declined the guy's offer to rev it a bit as a) the motor would still be cold and b) it was still early. His neighbours wouldn't like me as it is without giving them extra ammo!
Seems pretty much okay under the cowls too, although the cowling has got a big patchy fibreglass repair in it (not that it'd bother me as I'd have one of Gav's and update it.)

Looks like a fair boat for the money, but it would need quite a bit of tidying to make it as clean as it looks in the pics.

I would say he's described it fairly and accurately. They seem like nice enough people, but it doesn't look anywhere near as nice in the glassfibre as in the pics! Then again, look at the price! It's a lot of power for the money.

Question is, can I be bothered to do the work? Still trying to decide with 15 mins to go.

Auction ended - 1 bid, £1900, reserve not met. They'll probably offer to that bidder I would imagine as the guy is looking for a quick sale.

Oh well, back on with the hunt. Now, when does that Fletcher end again?......
