Clive the Dustman? He was responsible for making my wife cry in our first ever OCR at Southend. Pissed past us on rallying six foot beside us and six foot in the air leaving me with a missus in tears and me in fits of laughter. Ran back into the slip kicked 'er out and shouted to a mate to come racing Much beer after with heaps of piss taking.

Wasn't it actually the old straight six 150 rated at powerhead rather than prop.
Seem to remember he had to get dispensation to run when they changed to 115hp

That would make another good thread - Memories of Clive Jones

Coupled with a 4 bladed Rolla Prop, he managed to be quick in the calm, and level in the rough.

Although we found out afterwards that Eastham's Yam was well "bent", (I think I finished 2nd to him in 11 races) Seapee on here went on to do great things with the set up.

I guess Splitpin can add more.
When I took my 18 from Steve in 89 he quoted totally the opposite. I was putting a 2.4 200 on and I specced fuel under back with no bow tank same as my 16.

He said the boat would be undriveable and would put the plug in for the tank anyway and supply later.

Cue two weeks in South of France buying bags of sand to stick up the nose. Took ficking months to get it all out again once the bags had split. Needless to say bow tank was waiting for me with Steve when I phoned.

I guess we are talking over a 26 year period - and Steve's set up theories changed due to successful racers.

You only have to look at Jon Clarkes set up -massive bow tank- (bent engines)

Or how Tim and Eric set their boat up to out race him.

No it wasn't. Back circa '84/'85 E class was using either 115 Yams or Mercs.
The likes of Barrie & Sheena Williams, Peter Clarke and Eddie Fraser were all using straight 6 115 Mercurys.

It was quite an involved conversation with Steve starting with you know the boat is only rated to 150. Me fingers and lalalala. His answer was to add layup round the transom and also at the floor joints as my 16 had parted company with the floor when racing and then get me to agree that 150 would have been plenty but him to agree it was laugh.

He was concerned more about the weight of the engine and cog as he hadn't seen many set up then for offshore with the 200. That with a 25" transom would lead to the prop digging in hard when skipping. As always he was right.

Was that '84? If it was I raced with Ray Holloway in his new Fletcher GTO with an 85 Suzuki. I think it was his 1st outing since hitting Nº24 Buoy on the old Cuxton course and breaking his navigator!!!!! I remember the Southend race being pretty rough!!!!!

Yep 84. I was running a P16 with Suzuki 115 (E26 After this race) that I'd stripped the night before having met with both Clive and Peter in the high street drumming up interest. The three of us instantly hit it off and they came back to mine to get the boat, throw out any useless stuff, bung some stuff in to get through scrutineering and then went on something of a large session around all the Southend haunts.

The next morning I was met by them with very bad heads and introduced to a chap in a wheelchair that used to successfully race Fletchers (Name escapes me now) who took one look at my mangled aluminium ski prop, laughed himself silly, disappeared for a moment and came trundling back with a silk lined mahogany box and presented me his prop saying he would just love to see it used again.

Usual proviso. ding it and it's yours. Cue me never having used a cleaver before banging into the first buoy from the start boat with full trim on and leaving the whole fleet behind as they couldn't see feck all Cost me a few beers that one.

Won the basic and gave Peter and Clive a good run for their money coming in third with them stating that knowledge of local conditions obviously played a huge part

Felt absolutely and totally fecked and then had it explained that kidney belts were not a bad idea.

Rough? To you boys maybe, just another day on the water for us Southend boys

Except me with a Suzuki.

You're spot on with the straight six statement but I'm sure Clive's was an old blue band 150 that was effectively the same engine but rebranded when they started rating at the prop??????

You chaps remember the old Class 4 days, what happened when Clive Jones lost a piston, and it made a new hole in the dash board?

Might be wrong but wasn't 83 or 84 the first year of OCR as opposed to class 4 with rules stating output rather than capacity. hence my comments about Clives engine. After that OCR boats used to enter the odd class 3 race??

That was mainly Derrick Mortimore. I remember at Brighton, he did the OCR/Class IV race, came in refuelled, ripped the C-Prefix off and then went and did the class III race.
Just going through some photos from that era. Will try and post them later.

The only OCR boats back then entering Class 3 races would have been Dell Buoy, Derick raced in class 3A and then in 3B in the Stapley, which of course is now in Basildon.

Mum and Dad always got on well with Dell and his wife - Connie?

They were of the same age, and used to go to dinner together.

Please send my regards on to them, on behalf of Mum and Dad.

Last saw Matt when he was working for BT opposite the futures trading floor.

Always good to see and catch up with old faces - 2008 RB helped!
