phantom 18 racedeck?

are there any of these around these days? I always fancied one!

I know of a Yamaha v6 175 on the cheap, any good on a racedeck?

How does the old 18 handle compared to the newer ocr 18xl or 19 or whatever it was called? I was last into speedboats around 96 when the new longer boat was starting to be made

As far as I know, there is no race deck option for the exl.

However, there was for the 16, 18, 21 and 25.

I think that there was an 18' race deck - Perhaps Adam and Blufin can help out here.

But from poor memory, didn't Ted Steindler race one - Just for Kicks ?

The only ones I can think of are the 1.3l racedeck special - cannot remeber who is was built for, but Alan Layton raced it at one point.

Much earlier than that Howard Wretham had Phant-C, mid 70's

Both of them specials rather than production boats I think. Whereas I think Ted's boat was a standard 18 deck with infill pieces to give it an enclosed race deck look.

As JF says there is no racedeck for the 19 although they have been run as a tandem setup - we would be happy to quote for one though!

1993 - I seem to rember John Miller had an 18 race deck for the worlds at Allhallow and Shirley Hall had an 18 racedeck which she raced as Goldstar in 1990.

When we first started racing MOD VP there were a lot of 18 Phantoms with a vinyl covered sheet of marine ply to enclose the cockpit, I don't remeber a dedicated racedeck though. Shakespeare made 1 for their 18, Mike Ring also made some glassfibre panels to enclose the cockpit on his 18.

I run with Ted in the 18 at poole around mmmhhh 1980, was a normal deck with NO infills a std 18 deck.
Howards one was a special & then had the Race deck 21 built in 1980, had the two 3 pointers in between these two, first 3 pointer went to Mick Afflick then Adam latter was damaged BER I recall at a Poole race ???

Dunno if this helped or confused the issue now !!!!!

I didn't think that Steve did a race deck in the P18. Though I could be wrong.
I raced with Clive Jones in what was Roger Trotman's old P18 with the old straight 6 115 Merc. Though it was Tandem setup, it defo wasn't a racedeck like my old P16.

Confused!

All I remember well was that my dad had the second race deck P16, the first was in blue and white and went up north.

Dad still has the invoice from Phantom - £1250

As a side note, what was interesting back then, was how Steve Baker told you how to rig the boat.

No bow tank, weight (petrol tank etc.) up the back for speed.

This was then challenged by Brian Eastham in Kin 'Ell Fire in 1987, who ran a 5 foot fuel tank under driver and navigator.

Coupled with a 4 bladed Rolla Prop, he managed to be quick in the calm, and level in the rough.

Although we found out afterwards that Eastham's Yam was well "bent", (I think I finished 2nd to him in 11 races) Seapee on here went on to do great things with the set up.

I guess Splitpin can add more.

So you weren't quite as bent as him?

I guess we should make a new thread, great bunch of characters.

Best memory is Graham driving Mr. Gory in a clapped out Rolls-Royce after some race down in Kent.
