A Ring 20 at 20'10" is a much bigger boat than a Phantom 20 at 6m and behaves like it. A Ring 20 does not have to be faster than a 21.The 21 does have a lot more room in it than a 20 but my 21 does not have a sundeck. I have raced 20's and 21's of both Phantom and Rings in single and twins. The problem with Ring 20's for me has always been not running in a straight line but turning corners - they tend to be very light and twitchy. The Phantom 20 corners on a sixpence and I would have said was almost impossible to hook. I have seen a Phantom 20 with twin std. 200 Mercs driven by Lenny Croxden and used in skiracing and the most horsepower I have had on one was provided by an old XR2 with a Land and Sea turbo! Phantom 21's are totally viceless - you can trim them all the way out and pick your nose with the other hand! They float very high in the water (even as a twin) with lots of freeboard providing a dry ride for passengers. In fact I have always considered them a little bit boring- the Ring 21 on the other hand is a different matter. If you can put too much horsepower on a Ring 21 you wouldn't know it! Have you looked at the 21 Cyclone - loads of room, fast, stable and as expensive as you want to make it.

Hi .. thanks for the advice .. can you conclude more about the Ring 21? When you say you wouldn't know it re the BHP .. what exactly do you mean? It handle the power well? Thanks

Welcome on board Gary: someone else chained to a microprocessor with too much time on their hands!

I'll buy you a beer at Allhallows if you'll return the favour...

I beg to differ here ...I've had first had experience of a phantom 20, and fast cornering you are almost certainly going to hook. I know iwas an observer in an f3 ski race at deeside and got soaked because i was flung clean out the boat as she nearly flipped over our skier was pissing himself laughing at us

Do you imagine that someone might start out in ski racing with a 21P twin rig? Lenny had LOADSA boats before that one.

Lenny's Phantom 20 twin was long before his last 21. It was red and called Adrenaline (done in real gold leaf) to pull Martin Brooks. I think it was done as an experiment and didn't last very long as I don't think Lenny enjoyed driving it. Last time I spoke to him he still had the Hallett though. There's plenty of very experienced offshore powerboat drivers who would jump into any Phantom but won't touch a Ring and I'm not saying it's impossible to hook a Phantom 20 - just difficult. The first turn at the end of the Diamond Race stretcher leg is a good example - turning in five abreast nobody else could live with it - always thought they were uncomfortable to ride in though.

Bud - I'll look forward to buying you a beer or two at Allhallows just as long as you get the extension lead out for the camper!
