Phantom/Ring 20/21 ? Help !

Hi,

Looking for new boat .. Thinking either Phantom or Ring 20 or 21 .. Can anyone offer any advice on this? So far I know that the Ring 20 is faster than the 21, the 21 can accomodate an inboard and may have a sun deck. The Rings seem cheaper than the phantoms.

What I want is a one of the above with between 150 and 225 bhp. I'd prefer one that's better in the chop and I would sacrifice top end for more practicality (i.e. so I can use it more often and don't have to wait for calmer days etc).

I'm also still keen on looking at that Pantera 24 on B&O's ...

Any advice seriously appreciated .. cheers, Will.

Ring 21 on eBay

In Buckinghamshire, no engine, needs TLC; currently at about £1K if you wanted a project.

I went to see it. Nearly bought it but the blue gel is cracking up through exposure / heat and some of the deck is effected the same way.
By the time you add steering / retrim/ and trailer brakes engine etc it soon adds up.
It was advertised as good condition for year but it really was in a sorry state.

your right about the ring 20 going faster than the 21's, I have a Ring 21 and I have found by seeing a friends ring 20 that even though he's got speed I certainly have comfort, there is certainly alot more space on a 21. The width is the one thing that really makes the difference. Although this might not be what your looking for.

Speed= ring 20
Comfort= ring21
Shagability=ring21

and there is a few rings for sale on ebay at the mo, also boatsandoutboards.com/co.uk (can't remember which one) have got a few too.

By Shagability, do you mean it looks better? or more room etc !?

So verdict is the 21 will be better in the chop than the 20?

to be honest I have no idea what she'll be like on the water, I only bought her a few months ago and been smartening her up. I will certainly let you know how she acts out on the water once I get her out there. The engine I have have on her is a 1992 'Black max' 250hp, cossy engine. Yet agin this is a new buy too and have not tested this baby either. Cant wait though, supposedly she'll do about 80mph, we'll see though. My prop is another thing I am not too knowledgeble on I will check the pitch once I get back though

Sounds good, when is the first launch scheduled for ?

I've found a ring 21 with a newish mag 350 inboard, this is 300+bhp?? Could be interesting?! The owner is about 80, so not sure it's much use to him anymore! .. trying to twist his arm to let it go! (Providing the thing is sound etc) ..

Your going to need the help of quite a powerful tow car to get that sort of speed out of it!

We repaired a 21D (same as our 21) a few years ago that had the same motor, and it was slower than the same boat with a 200hp v6.

The cossie was a nice motor, but best suited to fishing boats!

The 80 year old your refering to, has spent a lifetime with fast boats and cars, racing cars included, and would probably be able to out drive the pants off you!

Yes, I know ... Think I'd still take my chances though ! No disrespect to the bloke, very nice chap, but he could barely lift the pen up to write his phone number down. Plus he said Thunderball gets him to Swanage from The RMYC in 4 minutes !! ??

Did Lance fit some wings in all ??!! Seriously though .. what should I go for the 20, or 21 ? And is Thunderball really worth considering? Looked a bit tatty, but he's certainly thrown some cash at it ...

Got a mate with a ring 21 and a 275 cossie engine on it. did lots of testing with different props etc and best speed we saw was around 65mph. as tony said its not really a performance motor more suited to a big heavy fishing boat.

Need to ask the obvious here ... but why is that cozzy motor not high performance? Surely the 275 hp works? What is it that makes it slower?
