´ill fated´? That reminds me - what happened to the Dry Martini hull after it was sacrificed to the land of pleasure cruising?

I'm not entirely sure!

Some fella decided it would be nice to have such a famous race boat kitted out for pleasure, complete with Sunseeker style cabin, whilst retaining the appearance of the original, ie, paint job, staggered motors #3's etc.

In reality, it got completely bastardised with bits n bobs from various boats, and in a desparate rush to get it ready for the 40th (?) Cowes anniversary event, it got 3 or 4 weeks of rushing & bodging, but failed to get finished in time. never hit the water as far as I know, dunno where it is now.

Ultimatum was still at Aruncraft in Littlehampton as of a year ago.

Tony didn't really sell it so much as someone (a German) bought it.

This guy had heard about the boat and bought it sight unseen. A refurb was begun by Aruncraft and the German went off the radar. He had paid for the boat and some of the work that had been done. They tried to contact him repeatedly for a long time with no luck.

That's why the boat is still in Littlehampton and probably belongs to Aruncraft.

It raced a couple of times when Tony owned it. Gosport and also a Southampton race where it stuffed in Southampton water in very snotty conditions. If memory serves, I think JF and TD were first overall in that race.

That would have been the race where 'Side Winder' found out the hard way about their seating arangement!

We did try to advise them, but they were convinced all was well!

It wasn't TD and I, as I had the 'ever keen' Dave Sperling on the wheel & pretending to navigate in that race. Twoz very snotty that day, imagine if we'd been in a RIB, we'd have lapped everyone

I have to say, it was quite nice to come in ahead of the 4 litre boats, and a class 2 Skater!

bloody enjoyable!

My strongest memory of that race, other than the huge rollers at the start, was Dave Sperling getting very excited as we passed (lapped) Geoff Purves's 4 litre cat 'Hospitality Inns' and the only thing he could think to do, was to give Geoff the Wanker sign! ...I ask you!! what a sophisticated crew!

As Dave rarely finished races in his own boat, let alone win any, he was totaly overwhelmed by the whole thing, very touching.

'Side Winder's' wonderful 'pedestal' racing seats!

Happy days!

One of the very few if not the only UK race to feature two Magnums - and both stuffed within 100 feet of each other.

It would still be good to get those older boats out racing again!

I've heard through the grapevine talk of starting a vintage racing class/club.

Had a phone call from someone who said he was buying Miss Enfield and he asked me if I would throttle for him!

Side Winder with a pair of 496HO's would be quite a tool!

Definitely would.

Come to think of it, there are quite a few old race boats out there, some needing major refurbs, others virtually ready to go.

This vintage class thing might be do-able. Maybe something could be organised. Why do I feel I have been down this road before?

It now lives in a boatyard on the Studland side of the Poole Harbour chain ferry, last I heard was when the owner phoned me looking for a 540 cu in motor for it!

For many a year the old Goldrush class 2 cat was up on blocks in a yard at the entrance to the Hamble - still there?

It certainly was a couple of years ago, although most of it's mechanical bits came up on ebay a while ago!

No, twoz called 'Waterfront' then, had a Nickelson-McLaren BB in it built by a mate of mine, which wound up on ebay recently, just a rusty mess now. very sad.

The pics of Goldrush 'Going Over' are here on this site somewhere.
