no worries, i will work off the photo on here and what i remember, for later on you might want to swap out the old rocker switch for the new style which shows tab position, something i wish i had when i ran her.

cheers,

Mark.

[QUOTE=larby;214029]

On the bright side, after countless hours of CNC cutting and £150 of welding, I went and ordered myself a NOS Volvo DPX drive from Bernico! This means I get to throw the whole brace away as it's A) not good enough and B) going to be 3" too high to work with the DPX drive. Ho hum!

Hi James ,boat is looking great ,i think you will be very happy with pull that your boat will have now that you have gone with the DPX drive ,i had DP on my 26ft with a blower and that thing could rearly move of the line ,the drive took a hammering for 19 years and never let go , had to buy a saddle once ,a big wave picked me up and dropped me on the ramp and broke it . hope to come over and see it when its all finished .

Good to know! I'm told they're incredibly strong drives. At the end of the day I'm not putting stupid power through them, just 5-600hp I'd imagine.

I hope you can make it across to say hi, we're planning to do a long haul poker run around all the channel islands and a couple of stops in France, it'd be great for a UK group to join us!

All the best,

James

Thanks very much Mark, that's be awesome! I was looking at those switches actually and trying to decide between one of those or manual indicators. The switch would be a neater solution if it's accurate enough to rely on? To be honest I never really use the tabs other than by feel to level the boat out, which won't be required with the DPX!
If you could get me a price on a fancy switch too that'd be great, may as well do it properly first time round eh!

Cheers, James

Seems to keep a V24 pretty stable compared to a B23!

They're staying on anyhoo, so can be used if required It's bad enough that I've just had to strip the bravo assembly and steering mounts off the transom, and it looks like the current water pickup will have to move too. It's one step forwards, two steps back at the moment!!

James, I use tabs with my dpx, wouldn't be without them. Also, you mention moving your water pickup, are you not going to pick it up directly from the dpx?

Hiya,

Yeah I'm keeping the tabs, must get around to sorting the pump!

Regarding the pickup... I'm a great fan of external pickups, and I've got an engine, an intercooler and a drive shower to feed.
I'll be using both the drive and an external pickup to feed a strainer. From there I'll have a main feed going through the oil cooler to the motor and a second feed from the strainer split to the intercooler and drive shower.
Original plan was to use the external for the motor and use the drive for the 'cooler and drive shower seperately. This way, I only need the one strainer and if anything were to happen to one pickup, the other will supply enough to get me home.

As it happens, the DPX has just arrived, I'll have a chance to get some pics up soon, it's all very exciting! Work to strip the transom completely to fill various bits and re-spray starts on sunday!

Hi James

Just a quike note to say what stunning work you are doing, as with mine when you have rebuilt a boat from bare hull up and desigen your own setup it will be so rewarding when its finish. Hope we can meet up when both our boats are finished will realy look forward to seeing you boat in the flesh.

Just reading your last post and wondered if you are going to have a raw water exchager to a sealed sytem for your charge cooler or is it designed to take raw water. With my system I have a seperate bronze lined heat exchanger which then has a sealed system with an electric pump, running glycol and water to feed the aluminium charge cooler. I have done this as I think sea water would corrode the aluminium charge cooler very quickley.

Have added a picture below, the blue heat exchanger feeds the aluminium charge cooler. Also what are you using for the engine heat exchanger?

Hello mate,

You're right about the satisfaction of doing it yourself, I still can't believe just how much I've done to it when I look back at the start!
Would be great to meet up some time, I hope to make it across to the UK for the start of RB12 along with a few others!

My cooler has a removable fully anodised core and is designed to take raw water, it's my intention to just run sea water through it. We'll see how it goes as the boat will be living on a trailer and will be flushed after every use.

As for the engine, I'm deciding on that one by this evening ironically! CP Performance reccommend a huge 3" by 25" cooler for my motor and steering cooler, seems a bit OTT though to me compared to my original 8" combined one! They rekon their 18" version only supports up to 450hp, maybe it's designed to handle warm lake water?
I think I'll most likely go for the 18" combined as a good compromise, I prefer the combined ones as there's less fittings to come off!

It's getting scary how close it is now, has to be ready by April for the first poker run and shootout!

Did my sums the other day and based on 30hrs, it's gonna cost me about £3k in fuel to run her in!! Ohh eck!! I've now got the chap who built the motor (hi kip!) navigating for me so there'll be no excuse if I abuse it!

James

Basic plan is to remove all stickers, rub down refurbish and polish exterior, blueprint the bottom, renew all the interior, floor etc, re-rig completely, rebuild the 8.2 and supercharge. I'm hoping to have her in mint condition inside and out by next year.

I'll be keeping the build thread a bit shorter this time, with the Puma I spent more time writing the thread out than doing the build!

Here she is the way I got her (minus the engine) up at the vinery, ready for the build...

It's a lot easier to build new than it is to refurbish.

Sweet Jesus do I wish I'd saved and built new instead!!!

Still, I've learnt a lot, including 'don't do this EVER again'.

Lain, yeah I am monitoring oil temp & pressure, along with a bunch of other things...

Cheers, James

Don't forget you'll need the senders in the actuators for the tab position to actually work - most don't have them as standard.

Aye, now I just need to get round to ordering my bits! I think i'll just be getting the pump for now, having just drained myself to sort the engine and rigging! I can always add the switch at a later date if I decide I want it.

Cheers, James
