Rotten Bearer pics for JF

Well they managed to cut the Wellcraft open today.....

look what they found inside

1 - 5 = obvious

6 - Shows the cause where the drain hole through the bearer had not been sealed (screwdriver passed easily into drain hole) This was the same on both sides.

8 - 9 This suprised everyone as it was two boards joined together and the engine mounting bolts were screwed into the join

10 - Anyone want some second user Bearers

Nice!!

You can't beat a bit of bad boatbuilding!

I take it these Longits run right through the boat, ie, under cockpit floor and cabin?

Luckily they don't ..

they are only about 4' long and stop at the first bulkhead behind the fuel tank.
the outers run full length and seem ok after a core test,

still hoping for the 24th

Not looking good today...

After the remainder of the bearers had been removed it was possible to inspect the transom a little more closley, It seems there is some soft and wet wood in there to

Origionally i was impressed by what seemed to be a very solid and well constructed boat but after a closer inspection this has to have some of the worst glass work i have ever seen,

MrRob ... a pic

It's not uncommon for a manufacturer NOT to completely encapsulate the timber used in the structures, or to do it, only to drill holes in it and unwitingly let the water in (which is much harder to get out than let in), or all of the above, along with using cheap, untreated timber.
It's shocking how quickly it can all go wrong if these cheap and simple details are left out.

An extra few quid per boat, and an extra few hours taking care of the details, and a boat can last ten fold.

Are you now looking at replacing the transom timber as well?

Credit where it's due... Walton marine have agreed to some minor cosmetic repairs, replacement of both bearers, and now a new transom, including bellows etc all for free

WAVEJUMPER - it's a 93

Whilst replacing the transom ply, it would be a good move to have a 'mouse hole' in the timber where the bung is located, that way, when the boat has some water sitting in the bilge it wont be soaking into the timber through the walls of the hole for the bung. Obviously the insides of the outdrive cut-out also need to be glassed/sealed to complete job.

Plenty of upduck around the stern drive studs/bolts/washers etc is also needed.

All this if you intend keeping it....or would just like to do a 'proper' job.
