Round Britain '08 book finally available!

I'm ridiculously pleased to be able to announce that my book on the 2008 Round Britain race is finally finished! It's called "Chasing The Horizon- one man's account of the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race".
A certain OldMan was kind enough to give me his opinion of the book, which I value greatly, considering his role!

"Derek Wynans' “Chasing the Horizon” is a vivid personal account of the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race and brought back all the memories of those ten crazy days in June 2008. It made me laugh out loud many times and brought tears of emotion to my eyes at others. It is a great read for anyone with a feeling of the sea and an ounce of adventure in their soul and without a doubt Derek has all of that in spades.

I couldn’t put the book down until I had read it in full. It’s hilariously funny in places and very poignant in others, Derek has written an account of his experiences in this race in such a way that you are standing there along side him feeling the pain and sharing in the enjoyment.

Many of his criticisms are valid, we the organisers made mistakes as we are only human but after 24 years and two and half years of development the race happened and those taking part completed their dream and now have memories they will never forget.

I congratulate and thank Derek for writing this record of one of the greatest powerboat races in the world. The Round Britain Powerboat Race of 2008."

Mike Lloyd
RB08 Event Director

I don't claim to have written the definitive chronicle of the race, just my own personal experiences. Having said that, I've done my best to include the stories of many other competitors- especially that of some of the smaller teams, who's adventures might have been overlooked by much of the boating Press.
Anyway, I hope you'll all go out & buy half a dozen copies each so that I can afford to buy my own ride for the RB12! The best place to find it is on Amazon.co.uk, Waterstones.com or WHSmith.co.uk.

Chasing The Horizon by Derek Wynans
ISBN Number: 978 0956393807

Thank you!
Derek

Amazon have it:

as do Waterstones:
http://www.waterstones.com/waterston...rizon/7200438/

Waterstones are cheaper, but don't forget the P+P costs!
Both are showing it as "Available For Pre-order", but it IS available NOW.
Thanks,
Derek

Round Britain Powerboat Race Book

Just saw book was now available.

Here is the blurb:

MBY contributor Derek Wynans has written a book about the 2008 Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race.

Derek, from Oban, joined a series of boats in the gruelling contest, which was only the third time the race had been held since its inaugural run in 1969.

He was one of the amateurs lining up against hardened professional powerboat racers driving massively powerful craft.

Among other boats, Derek was on board the revamped Ocean Pirate, the classic Fairey Miss Daisy and eventual second-place Norwegian entry from Goldfish.

A spokesman for the publishers says: "Funny, gritty, and always painfully honest, Chasing The Horizon is one man's true account of the hardships and horrors faced as he took part in one of the toughest offshore endurance races ever held.

"Covering the race for one of the UK's biggest boating magazines, Derek Wynans thought he had it made.

"The plan was simple - join one of the top-rated teams as they thundered round Britain at speeds of 90mph.

"But with just hours to go, the plan sank without a trace, leaving him no option but to beg total strangers for a lift.

"So began one of the toughest challenges the author ever had to face, from being abused by parrots to being propositioned by a Polish pimp.

"For Derek Wynans the easy part was racing across the tumultuous sea for six hours at a stretch.

"Finding a bed for the night and a ride for the next day, that was the real challenge."

Derek has interviewed all the 47 teams that took part and attempts to tell their stories as they roared around the coast.

The book boasts black and white images by award-winning photographer Chris Davies, also a regular contributor to MBY.

Mike Lloyd, who organised the 2008 Round Britain, says: "Chasing The Horizon is a vivid personal account of the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race and brought back all the memories of those 10 crazy days.

"It's hilariously funny in places and very poignant in others.

"I congratulate and thank Derek for writing this record of one of the greatest powerboat races in the world."

Sounds like a car or plane would be better suited to the venture.

Well done Derek.
Can I have an autographed copy?

It's just that your other book isn't something I can leave on the coffee table and allow the kids to read!

can't see P1 letting this race with an Ocke wing attached all the other manufactures will start sprouting wings and it does not fully retract going by their video and at 128mph 6000+kg and 2400hp I would of thought if you weighted Reggie's cat killer and knocked off a few ponies it would still exceed those speeds

Just received my signed copy from Derek so that’s it for the weekend, the garden and the odd jobs that need to be done can wait until another day.

Blazing fire, glasses cleaned and polished, whisky/coffee to my right hand, comfortable chair, and I’m not to be disturbed until I have finished the book once again.

So it’s back to June the 21st 2008.

You lucky bugger, the French postal system might enable me to read my own copy in about a weeks time. Sitting at home with 2 cracked ribs and nothing to read and I wasn't anywhere near a boat at the time!! Extreme dog walking for you!!
