Round the island race
Ive been going to the power boat racing at Cowes since the late 70's as a spectator bobing about in various boats. i notice on this years program the round island race appears to be open to non racers. Do you need special licences or special equipment?
is there anything else i should know?

The Round the Island race is a 'basic race' meaning a full racing licence is not required to participate. The boat and crew however will have to carry certain safety equipment to comply with regulations and the crew can purchase 'day licences' at the event.
There has been a basic race at Cowes since 1998 when Barry Cass from the Duke of York in Cowes first mentioned the idea to me and I ran it past Tim Powell who thought it a good idea so we organised it.

Think my cruise in Ab-Fab was in 97 when it was "competing" in Touring Class. Will never forget the pleasure of the start when I as a passenger watched all the boats (including the start boat) pull away from us on the run up to the start.
A while back you posted a video of Ab-Fab in all it's glory tearing up the water in Bournemouth. Perhaps you can find and repost it to enlighten those forum members who have not had the opportunity of seeing the boat in full racing trim.

On a good day with a tailwind it might just exceed the legal speed limit in a built up area.............maybe.

Bandit if you r serious & want serious info, then you need to file application form with KBL Ltd SSSSSSSSSSS by this friday. You can get form and details from www.cowespowerboatfestival.com
You need to contact Sheila at the RYA powerboat racing section for a book listing equipment required to race in a basic race.
The cost of day licence is £60 each and cost of entry is £125.
Remember its about having fun and you have to finish to win.
ie it is rare that the fastest boat wins, reliability & speed is the key.
It would be great to see you competing, the more boats the better. If I can help with any equipment, try me! I have some spares.
the bonus is you get a free berth, all weekend if you marshal on friday and sunday.
Have fun

kinda.
Can't vouch for now, but back in the days of black & white TV, and 'Team Extreme', we managed to do all three quite regularly.
It aint rocket science, you just gotta get rid of all the question marks you can.

Serious question JF, if you raced and managed all 3, weldone & respect. As a newcomer to racing & its history, can I ask what boat you raced & in what class. I have seen the photo of you with a trophy, so I know its not bullshit. I am genuinely interested & prommise not come back with any wise cracks or jokes. (that's a dead end road, as u say)
Cheers
