Running height of gear case on mono hull

So what height does everyone think is best for all round running on a mono hull??

I guess it depends on the hull too. What works on one may not work on another.

definitely depends on firstly the hull, ie, is it stepped, or regular 'V' bottom, then on the prop type.

You'll need some drive line depth, to get the thrust line low enough to keep the bows up at the higher speeds. If you can't keep the bow light, it'll feel like it wants to swap ends (and probably will)

thats posted as a bolted on the transom question.
if you have a lifter u get the best of both worlds. real low for good handling in rough and mega high for ultimate speed on flat water
no point going any higher than 2" above cus you will loose water pressure but 4" below is great for handling

7" of travel on your lifter and your only going to let it go down to 2" below.

well 4" below is also 1.5 inch cut out the transom!!!
Jon, Ian,, all you guys in the know, doya think its worth cutting the transom down to allow the engine to go 4" below? as JBD said we have a 7" lift gorilla so that would still allow us to have the engine 3" above.

it aint just a bit of wood ! its the top of the 'kin transom!
aint as old as ur 20 year old boat

But I aint scared of drilling holes and cutting transoms if it make me boat bettererer and me boats 19 not 20

I had my new p18 cut down to fit a shortshaft, must admit I didn't like doing it.

Opinions please

The reason that I have cut my transom is in order to run a 15" leg, this has lowered the C.O.G. so the handling is better. I do not like lifters or setback so my gearcase is level with the keel. We have found this the best we can get in all conditions. We know we are slow in calm water but we were never going to keep up with cats or batboats with a "skiboat". By adding the setback we found the handling compromised without an appreciable increase in speed, so we removed it. I also dont like all the "bling" hanging off the arse-end cos it is something else that can let you down in a race and puts undue stress on the transom.
As I said in my PM to you a little while ago, with all that power why do you want a lifter? I would cut down the transon and bolt the motor on directly. But that is just my view.
