I know it's 'the way of the world' these days, but safety crews never expected to get paid for their services until the last few years. I've been doing safety on & off for the last 10 years and have never recieved, nor expected any money in return, or to run the boat. For me it was always 'putting a bit back in to the sport', but for most, it was a good excuse to go boating, being a usefull part of the machine and generaly being out amongst it all.

Things have certainly changed.

I don#t think Ski racing pay for safety either its normally local club members that do it. at our local race we offer some boat fuel money but most refuse it because they enjoy it. We have a start boat that goes to every venue not sure if he gets paid or not.
Are to offshore races not organised by local clubs then??

Not many sites for offshore racing in Surrey...

Also we have a tiny club. We only have five boats in total membership, and one is a fishing boat and three are race boats!

anyone who is involved with organizing an event will know that the expenses are huge!!and that does not include the organizers out of back pocket expensies just sorting permissions with councils/harbour masters,risk assesments,hse policys,telephone calls and the list goes on!! ski racing has them just like any rya organized event;
timekeepers,judges,scruitineers,start boat he is paid,saftey boats are offered money,paramedics one of the biggest costs,race fee to british waterski £110.00,trophies again a big cost just for rubbish £500-700 buys nothing,hire of tractors/cranes depending where you are,pa system to invlove the crowds,and the costs keep going up ! and in ski racing we are lucky with the event insurace being paid for by british waterski and the boat insurance down to each individual boat owner !and still the organizers still get nothing but grief from competitors not a penny in there pockets !!and as a compeitor and organizer i hope this might just get some competitors thinking of how much hard work goes into a simple race !

I dont think anybody questions the genuine expenses that are involved in hosting an event it's the "Cain it as somebody else is paying" attitude that exist with some individuals.
It not rife but I have seen it first hand and what a total pi*s take it was too.

It was a VERY interesting experiance to organise an event, and a very expensive one. I can probably only afford to organise one or two events a year, and will need the support I got last time to make it possible!
