Setting the timing up?

Well 'The Mutz Nuts' is back home now and I have got to set the timing up.
The engine has to be at rpms of upto 6250 rpm when doing the timing though!
Does anyone have any suggestions for putting the engine under load?
possibly a dyno?
I think running on the hose will be o.k at these rpms for short bursts as it gets about 5-6 psi water pressure when on the hose at idle.
also i dont know how to check the timing either, my dad brought a timing light last year to set the timing up properly but I never got round to doing it!

If anyone could help I would appriciate it.
Cheers Guys
Ross

back it down a slipway somewhere and get the motor under load.

Are you sure about this. It seems suspicious. Advance/retard at revs is usually known, so you set the baseline at idle/cranking speed and factor in WOT advance/retard.

If it's a must, you read stories on S&F about engines running away, plus with no load it'll be pretty difficult to hold the revs accurately (bearing in mind your sphincter will be shaking too)

I've read on S&F about running motors no load and running away. Don't see how they'd keep running once the ignition was cut, but seem to remember it was John Marles or Jay Smith that said it. So I'd play cautious and do as gav says - stick a small shit prop on it to give it some load and guarantee that it then also has plenty of water.

o.k Cheers guys, yep that sounds like a good idea!
I just need a prop now!
we had a 19" prop that would have been perfect but we donated this to someone on the forum, i think it was Dan.

Anyone got a prop we could borrow?

i wouldnt run it at those rpms on a trailer dude as the impeller can not supply enough cooling water. the cooling relys on water being forced up the pickups due to speed and not through the water impeller. if you want to do it even though (i cant see why as i agree with matt) then you need to put a fitting into the tuner adaptor and run water to that rather than through the gearbox.
