Sportsboat and RIB

Just thought I'd mention that they have stopped publishing the magazine and Boat magazine as well - others from CSL will continue and it looks like there will be refunds of subscriptions - There is a statement on the CSL Website if you're interested. The next issue will be the last - for now allegedly!

Very sad news - both were excellent magazines.

Used to love SB mag, I must have hundreds of the buggers at home. Frankly though its got increasingly shit over the years.

I mean, they let anyone write in it now (sorry cookee, couldn't resist!)

Yeah it was indeed a good read when it was "Sportsboat" and then it went downhill big time.

That's interesting. I've only known of it as SB&R, and is also how I just found this place. In what ways was it better then?

It was just more interesting.

Better, longer articles on Uk product, Racing, Events, History, Small Businesses.

It now appears to be dominated by reviews of genmar type boats and "donated" articles.

Whatever ones opinion of SB&R, & yes, it has of late included more "general sportsboats" (Genmar types if you like), it was still a monthly mag one could pick up & read whenever you wished.
IMHO They tried to appeal to everyone, as broad a reader base as poss I guess, which sometimes does not work.
I personally enjoy reading boat tests, & they certainly had plenty.
Trouble is, Dave Sewell publishes his mag every two or three months & there are only IPC magazines left it seems (MB&Y and MBM), that publish monthly.
Boat Mart has improved enormously over the years, & if anything, I will miss that more than SB&R. Plenty for the "average Joe" type of boater, with mentions of races, etc too.
Anything is better than nothing.

So what could be the alternative? If there is one? Interner magazines are just not the same.

Big shame.

That's what we all think on the SB&R forum too.

well, I think SB could have easily gone to a 6 issue per year magazine, provided some greater variety and substance.

Yeah in all fairness it was very light on the ground as far as sportsboats go, aprt from racing. i can remember back in the heyday when dad used to buy all the mags like powerboat and waterski, etc. when you had all the UK sports boats in production, you would see articles on Ring, Phantom, Marshan, fletcher et al and when the whole cottage industry was thriving. maybe thats what was lacking ( i understand that this part of it is long gone) but i guess supply and demand and all that.
I Suppose in hindsite it would have been nice to see an article on new builders or relaunched moulds...i think cobra were the only ones to do a large spread on the 21. , but when you delve deeper we now have Bananashark, Extreme's still have fletchers, the Concorde, the Barracuda(abcast) maybe even myself with mine and if someone had picked up the Marshan moulds ( and i do hope someone has) and anyone else out there doing that little something.
What ever your views are on any of the above, I think any little press for people looking to try something would have been nice.

I guess its too little and too late. Shame really because on a similar note it was the same as boat shows 20-25 years ago with ski boats on stands.
I can remember as a kid seeing so many different makes.

I know this probably would never happen but its a shame small independent builders were offered a pitch at some of the big shows to show of the wares. I know some boats were at the SB&R show at ocean village.
The outdoor show at Windsor would have been a good one.
It Is amazing when you go to the EXCEL and they would rather have a smaller show or dead floor space than drop prices. i stand to be corrected if this is wrong.

I hope they do relaunch it and maybe its worth telling them what we as consumers feel its lacking?
all feed back is good.

shame about SB&R whether you like the magazine or not, from my point of view as a new builder its one lost place for us to advertise, as for renegades comments about the london b/show i agree with him they would rather a smaller show than drop prices we have been quoted £4600 +vat for a 5mx6m stand chuck in another grand for expenses and thats a large chunk of money southampton was 3600 +vat. when compared to advertising in mags at £375 a month so to have one go down it leaves our options limited
