OK, I've made ten DVD copies of Carls' Surfury video. More can be made if the demand is there.

As he's already said, it's a tad under 13 minutes long, and has some excellent footage, mostly shot from a helicopter.
Sadly there is no soundtrack.

Main subject is 'Surfury', but there's also coverage of 'DELTA', 'DELTA SYNTHISIS', and some other Levis' that I can't say I reccongnise.

I've put a small (<3 min) 'teaser' edit together, just to give an Idea of whats on the DVD.

You can view the short edit Here (It's 32 meg)

I reckon the best bet for anyone who wants one of these DVD's, is to send a cheque to Chris, made out to whatever the cause bank acc is, and when he has the wonga, I'll send the DVD.

I'll leave Chris to set the price, but obviously, as this is a 'donation to the cause', it shouldn't neccesarily represent the value of a DVD! Rather, it should represent some commitment to saving the boat.
In other words, it aint gonna be a fiver!

Am I really that bloody old, I watched them pass by as a kid.........Mind you It scares me shitless when I see the footage of Bobby Moore lifting the world cup outside the Royal Garden hotel, with me in me damm shorts in front of the balcony, yep the police had worsley,s with bells on the front too

Notice the crowds watching from the shore at portland & torquay was like that at all the varntage points along the route.
ohhh geting goose bumps

If only it could have the same treatment as Ghostrider and be fully functional as well.

Rather than slip lottery cash to the gay black lesbian guinea pig farmers in venezuela send some for a full restoration. Is it possible for an internet pertition.
Total crying shame the powers that be would let it happen. Not much of a National Motorboat Museum if they continue in the current stance, Sorry but dont do politics.... get ya "F"ing finger out .......sort it and save it.

To any RYA, Cougar, Sunseeker, Farline, Princess, Red funnel or any other offical/ party in the British Marine Industry, feel free to step in and save this one, bloody heck stick half a dozen apprentices on it for 6 months wont break ya bank would it?

This wasn't a rant but a pro-active opinion

Wow! That is f*·kin brilliant! Got goose bumps watching Surfury go past the crowds onshore. And how close did that helicopter come to landing on top of the crew onboard Delta Synthesis?!!!!!
Chris if you can reserve a copy for me please! Let me have the account details!

What a great response from you all to getting the film onto DVD. If all are happy I could get some copies made & maybe we can ask Basildon if they could sell them on behalf of the Surfury Fund.

Any donations of material by post:

Just want to clarify a point: The NMM or National Maritime Musem own Surfury and it is their responsibilty for its maintenance and also its display and tenure. They have a huge list of vessels to look after & "Surfury" unfortunately remains well short of any priority list for expenditure or highlight.

Basildon - The Motor Boat Museum have had "Surfury" on loan from the NMM there since the mid 80's and without any funding from the NMM & it is they have had to look after her. They have done a fantastic job and without Basildon and especially Julie Graham the curtor on site, whos infectious enthusiasm is one of themost positive reasons, we would not have the small amount of preservation that is present today. Unfortunatley without ownership Basildon will always prioritise its own assets.

So no blame - its just that to get some care and some money for "Surfury" and for that we need to establish a cause.
This current support is vital - thanks again

Chris

Given all the facts & details you're just explained, would it not be logical for the NMM to simply 'donate' Surfury to Basildon?

They (Basildon) could then raise money for work on Surfury without thinking is a lost cause from thier perspective.

It all seems bloody obvious from 'outside', so I assume there's a sticking point?

Yes - The change of ownership is the key to the door and would be the first step to a long term solution. I am trying to find out how we could get both parties NMM and Basildon to the the agreement of the change of tenure. It rests (as ever) with money - Basildon certainly want her but only if she can be improved & provided for.

We believe, as do some other stakeholders there must also be some commercial value in her for support to races, exhibitions etc. Anybody got any ideas or contacts? Imagine the value of Surfury and Ghost Rider as start or lead off Boats of races!

There is a move to see if we can get her to Cowes for the race weekend in August as a static display as it may be that Baryy Cohen and Chris Witty are going to be able to get Ghost Rider over from the States. This would be a first tangible move into the public arena and would bound to attract attention. From there - maybe a sponsored or supported display at this years Boat Show?

I am currently researching as to how other potential beneficiaries could be engaged again any ideas or contacts - please let me know chris.grayer@btinternet.com

PS The Surfury EMail website address is "doing one " at the moment so apologies if I haven't responded as I haven't been able to read them!

Surely NMM don't want to 'sell' Surfury to Basildon? I can't imagine they paid for it in the first place did they? I always imagined it was donated.

So, if they didn't pay for it, and are not prepared to look after it, it seems cut & dried to me.

seems there are a few contradictions?

in one way it does not seem inportant to NMM as it is low on priority - but is being valued in terms of finance.

Surely it is everybodies interest to see the boats future sorted out for the best rather than worrying on what might be missed out on financially?

Surfury

Ive been in touch with Chris many times he deserves all the help he can get , I'm appalled at how the marine industry in Britain ignores craft like Surfury they all made their money on the back of craft like this but when it comes to helping save history no one wants to know there should be a proper museum in Cowes we have to wake up before it is too late

I do have a copy but nowhere nears as good as this one! Its going on the web page!

Please all, do send your Surfury wishes & comments to the NMM - the curator is Simon Stephens - no abuse because he's a good guy with just too many boats to look after!

If you lobby for her ownership to be transferred to Basildon I am sure the Guys at the NMM will listen.

We can then, once her tenure is stabilised get on with preserving or renovating her!

Cheers & for those able to get out this week end - enjoy the first sun!
