Great stuff- remember it well, even though I was only 11 ! Went to all the UK races that year, that was real racing ... In rough water ... Out at sea ... 100 + mile courses generally to somewhere interesting- ever tried to find Skerries bouy without GPS ? Bloody hard I can tell you. Not like now !

Probably why Dad was so desperate to have you in the back seat!!!

Do you still do those charts that take 15 marker pens, 50 sheets of paper and a whole roll of clingfilm? I remember it used to take me an hour on a Monday morning (before school) to remove them all!

Still you had a 100% pass mark of getting round the marks!

Must dig out some old photos of your nav notes....

Unfortunately GPS rather took the skill out of it ! Still got some old notes in a box, found them the other day in a garage clearout, may scan them in and post them to show some of these back seat boys how it used to be done. Now its a bit like using a calculator in a maths exam ...

Yes, those days when if an engine broke (on a boat with more than one) the crew calmed themselves down and made their own way home.
None of that; "Safety, safety we need a tow, our engine is broken"
Safety; "What, both of them?"
Competitor; "Er, no. Our boat is difficult to steer off the plane"

That seems a bit unfair. There are still some who make their way back in on one engine.

Then again we usually expect an engine to fail and are prepared. Plenty of cigarettes and libations for the long trek back to port.

You would not beleive the phone converstations that go on between the OOD and me when half the race fleet is ON TOW!

There are one or two of us that remember it - actually it wasn't that long ago!
