Just to stir it up further, all the above comments I think you'll find are for a trailer with over run brakes. If I remember rightly, anything with a GTW greater than 3,500kg must have close coupled brakes e.g. air brakes fitted.
Remember way back when, when Class 1 boats were towed with Ford F-150 and Chevy's etc!!!!!

Apparently The law on Trailer width has now changed, you can legally tow upto 2.5m wide the same as Commercial vehicle Trailers. (Unless it is a fridge trailer when it can be 2.6m wide).

National Trailer and Towing Association
www.ntta.co.uk

Am I covered? I have a C+E cat 2 restriction!!!!! lol.
Graham.

The old rule used to be that if the trailer exceeeded the towing vehicles weight, you were restricted to 40mph, hence why you can tow a ford granada on a trailer with a ford granada but you were restricted in the speed you could tow at.

That was a bit too simple for the law makers, so they introduced the new rules using MAW, and made the trailer entitlement seperate on cars instead of being automatically included

This caused more problems because with the new trailer entitlement being seperate, the MAW could be exceeded, so they brought in the C1+E to cover that and changed the old 7500kg entitlement down to 3500kg on the B licence, as the new C1 licence also covered the "big" vans

This then extended to D+E,D1+E and C+E, the only class that was "left alone" was A (motorbike) but to make everyone confused on that they used engine size, KSW, trailer width and length from rear of trailer to center of rear wheel

As a note on C and C1 licence it used to be that if you held a licence of a higher category then you automatically got the licence for the lower one, which means that if you drive a 72 coach on a C licence and recently passed your test, you cannot drive a 12 seater mini bus without taking another test

Hence why your everday bobby is just as confused as everybody else, but the specialist traffic cops supposidley are not?

and when they started on axle weights it really went to pot, hence why a single wheeled rear axle ambulance could not pick up an overweight casualty unless the paramedic got out and travelled behind in another vehicle (they are twin wheeled now so the axle weight can be increased)

total madness

Another spanner in the works, depends whether the tow vehicle is plated or not.
A van that is Transit sized can be plated or not depending on its usage.
I would think Nic Surry knows more about this.

As for being taken to a weighbridge, the Police must take you to the nearest open Public Weighbridge within 5 miles of where they stopped you.

Ok then,
I seem to remember the old 85% rule and that’s why what I was told kinda made sense to me,
now i take it all of the above is in reference to a ball hitch?
The reason i ask is i have been asked to tow a mini digger on my pin hitch!
Now i know the van will pull it but that’s not the issue here is it.

The code 107 next to your C1E means you got your C1E by default - without taking the actual test ie due to old age.

A 'normal' C1E can tow a 3.5ton trailer with a 7.5 ton lorry.
a code 107 C1E can only tow up to a maximum of 750kg trailer with a 7.5 ton lorry due to the meaning of code 107 - Limited to a maximum train weight of 8250kg

The 85% rule was what was generally reconized by caravan organizations

"the ideal" weight of the caravan should not exceed 85% of the towing vehicles weight

obviously this could be applied to other users as well, but I believe it was them that introduced it

This is what is written on back of my licence (i have old pink and green type licence)

I'm listed to drive...

B... Motor cars or light vans with up to 8 passanger seats and up to 3500kg with light trailer

C1...Vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg with trailer up to 750kg

D1...Small passenger carrying vehicles with 9 to 16 passanger seats with trailer up to 750kg

B+E...Motor cars or light vans with up to 8 passenger seats and up to 3500kg with heavy trailer

C1+E... vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg with a trailer over 750kg-combined weight not more than 12000kg

D1+E...small passenger carrying vehicles with 9 to 16 passenger seats with a trailer over 750kg, combined weight not more than 12000kg

and now the numbers on the licence

107...not more than 8250kg

101... not for hire or reward

119...weight limit does not apply.

Now i got head f++k C1+E & D1+E say i can drive vehicles and trailer up to 12000kg combined.

But then you have the numbers which to me seem to contradict the categories?

I then have next to C1+E number 107 which says no more than 8250kg

And then right at the end next to D1+E numbers 101 & 119 weight limit does not apply

Basically you have grand father rights

they have to give you the restricted new cat's as that is the new licence cat's
then as you passed your test prior to the new cat's they have to give you back the old 7500kg weight limits for you old cat B, hence the C1 and D1

clear as mud

What a load of over complicated BS - you should be able to tow up to the rated capacity of the vehicle being driven.

I think it says you can tow up to 2.55 metres wide just like the rest of Europe now.
