ukoba 1989

Hi,

Does anyone know if the UKOBA 1989 series is available vhs/dvd as it shows my Cougar racing against Flippin eck/Brut.

Also can anyone tell me if I fit a pair of H/O 250 E-tech which do not have contra rotating boxes will there be much effect on the boat as they are so far spaced apart.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve
I was racing on Flippin Eck that year and I think that the BBC filmed us throughout that series. I am sure you feature there somewhere during the Needles race. I will have a look and come back to you. I do have it on DVD kindly put on there by Jon Fuller. It might even be on here somewhere, anyhow, I will have a look and report back.

Thanks for that, the Cougar was being raced by Andrew Chambers at the time.
I have a great picture framed 22x18 with both boats leaping around that I found at Southampton boatshow a few years ago.
Look forward to hearing from you soon

Is this a great site or what

Black Flash

Are we talking about `Black Flash` as raced by A.Chambers in 87/88.No record of it in 89.If it is,it`s featured as the villiain`s boat in `Howards Way`.

Thats the one, thanks for the great pic I have been asking Andy If he had any racing shots.
From the little race footage I have seen the Cougar handled really well in rough conditions which is mainly what we have in Guernsey.

When the boat raced here it saw off the reigning fast boat a P25 called Obsession running twin 2.4efi.
That was owned at the time by Martin Fernando of Jersey.

The UKOBA race we are talking about was 1988 because that was the only year we raced Flippin Eck as a Class two boat. Still looking for the film!! If I remember right, the Ciugar Cat was struggling in the big head seas as we ran towards Old Harry Rocks.

If you are referring to the video that I found and posted a link to yesterday, it was put there by 'Lars Lindroth'.

You'd have a lot of steering torque, thats for sure, i don't think it'd be a very nice ride at all, she'd probably crab like mad! Mine can be a handful with the counter rotating!
I know where there's a nice pair of counter rotating yams just like the ones she used to run!

Hi James,

Thanks for that but I did a fair few hours in Flash after the Yams were rebuilt, having always raced Mercs I think the extra grunt of the 250xs motors would be ideal.
A couple of people are chasing these up for me at the moment

Cheers
Steve

We tried a set 250 yamaha,s on a Cougar 25 ,this was 12-13 years ago so there were only 25 inch shafts in 250 Yams ,we put them on brackets so centerline props were pretty high so there was barely enough water pressure ,with all that torque it shoot out of the hole like a rocket ,but there was never any topspeed ,not like with 2 x 2,4 EFI Mercs that were on the boat when she came ,when the mercs start screaming the boat was going fast ,much faster than with new 250,yams .
We still think it has to do with the lower units sticking too deep in the water ,and drag too much .
I think the best you can do is to find a set engines that are not too heavy in weight ,so the balance is not disturbed to much.
Don,t buy a set without counter rotation ,its dangerous ,the 250 XS mercs are good engines ,good power too,and the right lower units for your boat ,the sportmasters are the best for a surface application like yours is .

The merc 250xs definately look like the way to go.

We sold the Cougar 25,several years ago,we had a 27 too, first with 4 x 2,4 efi,s , and almost got killed,later we tried 3 x 2,4 efi,s , we sold that boat too.
I do have pics somewhere from the 25,but not digital...
Cougar cats are good in the rough ,stiff and strong .
The 25 had a big porposing zone ,the 27 had no notch ,so true bottem is actually a lot longer ,and by adding a manual lift/jackplate with a little setback it worked ok ,and we could raise the engines far enough to have good speed.

I have seen a 27 in yellow/white livery running a pair of 300V8 Evinrudes, thats a lot of weight hanging off the blunt end.
The jack plates sound like a good idea and I might fit a decent set of trim plates to give a little more waterline length-best thing I ever did on my phantom 600.
Thanks for the info, I would have loved to see your 27 go with the EFI,s on

The hull looked exactly like my 25 Cougar ,but I have not seen a deck like yours ? did you have it modified ?

Hi A.J.
No mods done to Cougar/as factory finished

The Velocity is a 26, I know who owns it, I will ask him if its for sale and get back to you.
It has not been in use for some time and as far as I know has a pair of 350,s

That has to be the boat I asked about a couple of weeks ago.

http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13916

I can probably answer most questions about it as it was when it was new.

Hi Ben,

Have spoken to the owner of the Velocity, he is starting to clean it up and was planning to remove/refurb the motors.

He plans to sell the boat and is going to supply me with some pics, he is happy for people to make an offer before or after the remedial work

Thanks for the info Steve.

Sterling, I'll try to dig out some pics of the boat when it was new and post them if that would be of any help.
