That must be a 'frame grab' from a video.

I Enjoy reading the posts on OSO and BoatMad.
But i am surprised there is so little powerboating going on in the
UK.
I am a Brit living in France but as far as speed goes there is very
little activity here for 9 months of the year.
I have had the priveledge to drive a number of Offshore powerboats including Comanches Apaches and Cigarettes.
It is good to see you Guys so commited to the Boats.
And finding time to make it Fun!.
Keep it up.And get those cameras on the boats this Season.

OK, lets move this thread up a gear!

About a year and a half ago, we had some keen American members, who I'm sure are well known to you guys, one of them started this thread at the time, which was very interesting reading, so I thought I'd reserect it.

Found this Jon,

FOUNTAIN CONSTRUCTION

We use only the finest materials and begin our production process with a highly polished mold which we researched, developed and built to meet exact tolerances. All of our boats are hand laid with the finest bi-, tri-, and quad-directional fiberglass, Interplastic vinyl ester resins and high density foam core. Interplastic vinyl ester resins is stronger, less likely to delaminate, more flexible and resists blistering better than polyester resins. Foam core, which is used extensively in the aerospace industry, is light weight, doesn't absorb water and is very strong when used sectionally in high stress areas.

Additionally, we are one of the few boat builders that takes the time to bond the deck and hull together with fiberglass as part of our six-step bonding process to create a unitized construction that is more durable and less likely to flex and break. Fountain's lamination schedules and techniques have been fine-tuned using the experience we've gained from building both race and pleasure boats for over 20 years.

'Speed' very Interesting. Thanks for that!

The Vinylester resin debate has cropped up here a few times, without much of an answer. My understanding of it (as explained to me by Steve Baker, (builder of Phantom Boats here) that in theory, Vinylester resin has an 'elongation to break' figure very close to that of strand glass.

In simple terms, this means that when you stress a piece of vinylester, it will stretch, then break, at about the same rate as the glass strands.
Whereas, Polyester resin doesn't, meaning that the resin in a polyester layup, when over-stressed, begins to crack and fail, a fair ways before the glass strands that it's bonding together.

All a bit like steel reinforced concrete. the cement being the resin, the steel rods being the glass strands.

His (Steve Baker) experience tho', has led him to think that whilst this should make for a more flexible, strong, durable laminate, in practice, when the laminate is stressed beyond it's breaking threshold, in say, an accident,or stuff/hook/capsize, the failure is far more likely to be (in his words) 'Catastrophic', whereas the polyester built boat would likely go to the workshop and have some minor damage repaired, the vinylester one would go in the dumpster.

He sights the reason for this being the inability to absorb energy in the way the poly layup does during a failure.

He stopped using Vinylester resins after just a few race boats, and reverted to his tried, tested and trusted glass/Kevlar/polyester/Balsa builds, with which he has had a fair bit of success.

All very interesting, to me at least.

Broken boats

The earlier part of this thread leads me to recall that, if I remember correctly, there have been numerous manufacturers with strength problems over the years. Wasn´t Rocky Aoki nearly killed in a Coyote/Cobra (?) hull somewhere under the Golden Gate Bridge many moons ago? And what of the Active cats? I seem to recall a considerable number of those broke apart too. (And no, I´m not a boat owner - just recollecting some old tales from the old magazines).

Yeah, the pics of Rocky Aoki's boat were pretty dramatic, as were the pics of Tom Gentry's mono that did a similar thing.

Also some great footage of a major structural failure in this Freeze-Frame clip. Looks like a fkkn bomb went off in the cabin!
