Wakeboard boat on a mooring??? Would you???
Hi all,
I have a monterey 180 edge with a wakeboard tower. Its a 4.3mercruiser inboard with a leg. I use it as a fun day boat with the lads and the birds, mostly used to tow toys and wakebord/ski. only ever used on the south coast in the salt.
I have been towing up and down from gloucester to the south coast and although its an easy drive its a pain! last year i put it in storage in salcombe but i found that i didnt use it atall. Next season i want to use it again as i did before (every other weekend). However i have lost my drive space so have nowhere to store it and i have sold my tow truck.
Ideally i want to leave it on a mooring from april-sept (ish) but the only moorings i can find/afford are ones that dry out... Can anyone advise me if its a bad idea to have a ski boat i care about on a drying mooring?? Obviously id be more happy leaving it on a floating mooring but i can get one for now?? obviously ill anti foul it..etc but will it trash the hull (it is almost unmarked at the mo)??
Any advice is appreciated.
Tom

There are a couple of people who will launch it for you on weekends you need it although I don't know what the relative costs are - ask the local boatyards.

I put my Sea Ray on a mooring through the summer months some years ago (South coast).
Yes, it trashed everything. The anti foul helped but every corner of the leg, transome, bolts etc were covered in tiny barnacles welded to the painted surfaces.
Plus, it was a great place for seagulls to rest and sh*t everywhere.
Then there's the risk of popping its mooring in the freak storm, other people interfering with your property etc etc.
On reflection I should have trailored it in every time.

I am looking in moorings around the Torquay, teingmouth dawlish or salcombe area?? They say the ground is fairly sandy/muddy...
The problem I have is I really hate trailering as it's a 1.8ton weight on the trailer so I have to have 8k's worth of tow truck for reliability, I'm only 24 so it costs me another grand for tax mot and insurance and the fuel is a killer. Plus I own a company car so only use the truck twice a month to tow with...
I did have a dry store and drop in service at salcombe but it's not cheap at all!!

01area on river Exe 15 mins from motorway about 500 to rent a non drying mooring M Samson will lift & scrub for a small fee but definately antifoul or you will lose 5 mph within weeks.Floating bar next to ski areais a bonus.

The way I do it is to keep a tow wagon. I've got a 4.7 jeep which I keep for the boat and have a cheap diesel smoker for work and everyday use. If you put it on a limited mileage the insurance is ok.

The problem I find with salcombe is getting to it. I live in gloucester and it takes me 1.5-2 hours to get to Teignmouth Torquay or saw lush... Etc. salcombe is only 30 miles further but sticks a good hour on the journey and it always seems busy. I would prefer to get something in Teignmouth Torquay or on the river exe??
