What year are these Rings?

Hey guys, just wanted to see if anybody could shine a little bit of info on these two Ring's I am looking at. One is pretty old (1980s?) and the other obviously newer. Both are said to be Ring 20s, can anybody confirm this from the pics? Any info would be great.

at a guess (and i cant wait for mike to come on here and tell me where i went wrong).. the 1st one is an earlies 80's Ring 18 and the later is a 1st series (or Model a) Ring 20/ from mid 80s

Thanks guys, hopefully Mike Ring will be able to shed some light onto them. Both obviously are UK imports with the older black one being an old-race boat (I think). The name of the team was Vulture Ventures if memory serves me right. Anybody know anything about them? And the next question is: between the two, which one should I expect to run better on calm days, and also in a bit of chop. I can't find much info on these older Ring hulls. Thanks.

Vulture ventures was a race team here in the UK in the early 90's. Charles Burnet?

Mark Pascoe (now of Honeyparty) was the race team chief

Do any of those guys post here? It would be interesting to see if they remember the boat at all. What class/engine would it have raced in?

Wasn't Vulture Ventures a engineering / fibreglass company? got some old powerboat magazines with them advertising services from hamble point, used to look after quite a few high profile teams and i think pascoe was named as their head of engineering or something

The black one is a dead ringer for the one we campaigned in 3c early 80's although it was a black 21 and it exploded so I cant see it being that one, it would of needed one hell of a rebuild

Sorry should point out the fact it exploded had nothing to do with Mike Rings excellent boat building abilities

Does the white and blue one appear to be an 18 or 20' model? I was told it was a 20, but then heard it might be an 18 - just want to clarify as I can't measure it right now. And does 74mph out of the blue and white one seem reasonable? Any idea on just how fast these boats can go?

Looking closely at it, it'd appear that the older black one used to be yellow...
To me the blue and white one looks like a 21, assuming the amusingly named yamahaaaaa is 200+ i would say 74 is possible. I've got two friends with R21's, one with an evinrude 200, other with a xr2, both manage 70's.

As far as i'm aware, 300's are too heavy for these, so tops would probably be a 280HP 2.5, I'd guess around 80 would be the top speed for one, at least if you still maintain a glimmer of safety!

I'm sure loads of other people on here would be far better qualified (mike - over to you!) to inform you on this though, i'm just bored so thought i'd have a go at helping!

Lol, thats cause we drive bikes as our main transport! And the engine is a modified Yamaha 225. Ported with some other goodies (ported to match a 2.6 V-max that goes 100mph+ on a Skater 21). I'm sure with a new prop and better tuning I can be pushing 80. Whats the consensus on size: 18, 20, or 21

Always a job to tell from the photos how long a boat is .BUT the black 18 ??
is from the series A mould mid /late 70s and the next is a series 20 B from the early eghties . The 18 has a conventional bottom but the 20 prob. has a step aft and a notched transom.

Thanks Mike, I was hoping you would give your thoughts on this. Am I right to assume the Black 18 will not have any type of HIN or similar on it as it was made early on and that the 20 (if a Model B) will have that piece of paper behind the dash? I will have a look at it when I get home in a few weeks and let you know. Thanks for the help. And great GREAT boats

Oi, I didnt do THAT BAD ole boy! I was but a wee lad when you built both of those boats. In fact the 18, its likely i werent even born!

To the best of my knowledge (rather limited) Vulture Ventures never had any kind of Ring powercraft boats. They were essentially a class II race team, that had a 'token' all girl team (which sometimes included camp companions Mark P and Simon Woodpower) running a IIIB boat (1.3 litre). these inluded a Phantom 16 race deck, a Frode 19 and their own VV-23 design. They also had a Phantom 23 (Gas Gas Gas) as a test bed for their LPG powered XR2 'grenade' program.

The 23 (Gas Gas Gas) used to be the Start boat for the OTA series didnt it ?

Seem to remember they had a lot of problems with it.

Is there any way the black boat is a 20' model and the white/blue one is an 18' model? I have a guy who knows both boats and who is trying to convince me the black boat is bigger than the white one. It doesn't really matter to me, just wanted to see if he was right.
