Whats the difference between a speedboat and a powerboat ?

I've just followed Wild Things thread "Boats and Jetskis website" to http://www.boatsandjetskis.co.uk where I see the boat lists split between speedboats and powerboats.

What's the definition of either ?
When does a speedboat become a powerboat ?

So a 16' Phantom with racedeck and a 90 Yamaha set up for the1.3ltr Offshore Powerboat Championships would be a speedboat. I think not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

was just waiting for that one splitpin,
Where do you draw the line a zapcat could be classed as a powerboat
hard one to draw the line on when it comes down to it.
Maybe it is more of a macho thing
"hey mate I like your speedboat"
Angry owner "Its not a feckin speedboat, its a POWERBOAT

As far as I have heard everything on here is a little speedboat, or at least to the people uninterested in boats or the media...as they always say when referring to an accident at sea or in a powerboat race, the word SPEEDBOAT, sad but true in most cases

This ones really not that difficult. You have to wear a crash helmet in a powerboat where as you don't in a speedboat!!!

Anyway it was nice knowing you all, I'll get my coat!!!

From an investigation on the web, Powerboat seems to be interchangeable with motorboat and is defined as "a boat propelled by an internal-combustion engine" while a Speedboat is defined as "a fast motorboat".

Speedboads must therefore be faster than powerboats !!

Any racers should read the following link (LOL):
