What's your preferred pickup??
So I'm in the process of designing a bow tank pickup with all the workings hidden inside the boat.
Question is, would people rather have a 'stand alone' pickup with a separate dump, or would you rather have a combined pickup/dump and would that option actually work on your hull?

Pick up
If this is any help I have pickup/dump it is slow to dump and leaks when you have it in the closed position (not so good for racing),it is neat to look at but the cable could do with being internal,

My thoughts exactly. I personally would have a pickup only and it can be much simpler that way too. Just wanted to check the thoughts of the public too!

Having said that one fitting one pipe one cable and one leaver = less weight and that's what I wanted for racing.

One fill to the top of the tank and a nice big bore gravity dump pipe out the transom at the bottom of the V with the valve between the seats so you and nav can use it, always worked well on the phantom.

If you can sort a decent standalone pickup I'll have one for sure, I've already got a big skin fitting in the bottom of my transom for dumping
I've got a tank up there, need the bugger plumbed in though after that race!

We've got a transom pickup with cables coming up and through the splashwell - an internal mechanism would look neater. Could it be done reliably and at sensible cost with a solenoid valve to save running a cable up to the helm?
We have an electric pump for the dump, personally I like to see it coming out of the side when emptying - obviously when it stops the tank is empty!
Yes I know you can roughly tell by the altitude of the boat but in the 28 it needs quite a lot of water in the tank before you really notice a difference in the handling (100+ litres)

Yeah I must admit I'm a fan of using a couple of huge pumps to empty the tank.
We've got a design on the go that would allow it to function as either a dual in/out or pickup only. This could be attached to a pump at the other end if gravity isn't enough alone to empty. I believe the tank would fill perfectly well with the water being pushed through a pump (need to check it wouldn't harm the pump!), then the pump could be activated either by dash switch or a micro-switch on the control to dump the tank.

On the pick up.... i say pick up only and dump over board where u can see it!

But what sort of pump do you use, inline, or a bilge pump in the tank, which would mean having access to it for repair/replacement.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster!!!!
Why does every body insist on trying to repair something that doesn't need fixing? The "Salmon" type pick up is simple, and works superbly, and they're less than £100.00.

My way of thinking is to have a pickup on the transom, running into the top of the tank. A small overflow fitting, also on the top of the tank and running out to a skin fitting somewhere visible. Water pissing out of there means the tank is full.
Have a bloody great hose running from the bottom of the tank, with a ball valve, running to a skin fitting at the bottom of the transom. One lever for pickup/hold, and the ball valve to empty. Nothing to go wrong!

Agreed, but (contrary to what some think!) I'm not just wanting to copy what's already out there. I'm wanting to create a pickup or combined effort which keeps all workings inside the boat, mainly in the interest of neatness. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but going by the interest I've had already there's definately a market!

I thought that till I pulled the lever off frank's valve in one race!! Also, you can't get to the bottom of the 'v' easily in all boats to reach a ball valve so some require 2 levers etc
Either way, I'm planning to have an option to do a nice simple pickup, so that'll suit people who want to stick to the traditional way
