Stapley/Tremlett

If my memory's correct ...
Chris used to sell bare wooden hulls to Ray.
Ray used to chop them in half lengthways.
Ray then used to cut an inch off either inside edge.
Ray then glued the two halves back together and rig them.
N. ("Doo you wanna buy a gear-box") Holmes used to have one.

Winner Boat

The only racing `Winner` boat I have seen is `Dell Bouy` which was Stapley designed,Winner built. It raced between 1984 and 1986,and in 1985 won the III B World and UK National titles, when driven by Derek Mortimore.

Can`t advise on builders history though.

Also attached is `Miss Chrysler` a stapley/tremlett just to show the difference between the boats.

N.Holmes raced a III C Stapley designed and built, not a Stapley/tremlett cut and shut job.See attached pic to see hull design difference compared to Miss Chrysler for example.

Dell Bouy was up at Basilidon.Maybe Derek Mortimore gave them the history of Winner boats to go on the display.

As an aside, whilst looking through the archives for Dell Bouy,I came across a snippet (1985) that said John Moore Jnr was going to race Class 1 the next year.Yeah right!

I heard rumour that Neil started off working for Ray building boats before starting South Godstone Sports Boats, don't know if this is true or not but might explain why he raced Stapley's early on

Holmes @ Stapley

Quite correct `Woody`.

Stapley had a young apprentice called Neil Holmes, whom he christened `Ethel` (does f""""" all).

As mentioned in previous post, the only winner build I have seen is Dell Bouy.I did state that N.Holmes boat was Stapley designed and built.

See Entry List for 1984 when entered as a III A boat.

So,just to clarify.

Are we saying Derek Mortimore had a winner stapley for 1984 as per entry list, and you built the stapley taloncraft that raced in 1985/86.

At the risk of boring even further,I have discovered a Brighton 84 report showing that the Dell Bouy winner hull ,winning class 4,and then ripping of the `c` part of the race number and going out to particpate in class 3.

Also, many years ago I wrote to Ray Stapley with my rough listings of his boats, and still have this listings with his comments on them, two of which he has written `Catnic` and `Pheasant Pluckers Son `as winner/stapley,yet I have found no trace of this in the entry lists.

Can you enlighten us on a background to the `winner `build involvement?

Fish, Catnic was a 1977/78 season E class powered by an OMC 115 driven by Ray Dickens. Wasn't as fast as the Merc 115's. Around this time there was a morphing of Winner into Driver, when Doug Driver, who had been supervising at Winner's in Penarth went out by himself. Most well known hull was probably the Driver 510.
I remember the 3C Pheasant Pluckers Son, because of the roll call in Margate one year, when the late Reg Turner made the obvious verbal gaff. Mind you, in those days it was popular to give OOD's and commentator's a rough time with boat names, like Bafty Crastard.

I remember it well, you and Neil Holmes came up too fast behind on a tight starboard mark and next thing I knew was flying upside with a Stapley stuck up my arse. Helmet twisted on impact and I thought I'd been blinded, however, with just my ear showing through the visor, Ted Jarret thought my head had come off. It did later in the bar of the Brixham Yacht Club, but that's another story.
