yamaha 70 help
Looking at getting a small battery just for starting the engine, anyone recommend one? It's on a thundercat so I'll need to waterproof it, the more compact the better.
And if anyone knows where to get boyesen reeds in the UK for a yam 70 that would be helpful too!

Shorai or Ballistic Lithium battery
Should be able to get Boyesons from any Tohatsu dealer but would recommend CCM.

cool thanks, any idea what size battery I would need? I've never had electric start on an outboard before!

wiring
Anyone know about wiring on these?
I'm going tiller control and pull start only, so a lot of the wires will be obselete I think. I have no idea which ones I need/don't need or where they need to go. I'll be needing the kill cord on the tiller.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
These are the ones leaving the engine to the controls:
Theres a yellow, green, white, red, brown, blue and black. That's about as much as I know about wiring!
The one on the left here I think is the limiter (covered in red tape), grey wire coming from the CDI box

Yellow 12v ignition on
Red 12v permanent
Black earth
Blue choke
Green tacho feed
White kill switch
Brown starter feed.
Whoever put those cheap crimps on needs a good seeing to. Decent heatshrink sealed ones are only a couple of pence each.

So with pull start, no trim, no battery etc. Where should I connect each wire?
Rough action plan
Pink wire - leave alone
Blue wire - remove, going to try and make a manual choke mechanism
Brown wire - remove
Yellow wire - remove
Green wire - remove (using a tiny tach)
Black wire - Shorten and use an earth on the engine
Sky blue wire - remove
Light green - remove
Red stripe wire - can I remove this? I have no battery. Or do I connect it somewhere else to provide voltage to the coils?
White wire - leave alone, see if I can make the killswitch work
Seem like a reasonable plan?
Yes I agree about the heatshrink! It was covered in tape as well, done before I got it.

You don't need any of those wires to get it to run with no control box connected. Trim them all down and insulate them apart from the white and black which you will need for the kill switch - the switch shorts the White to the black to kill the engine. You shouldn't need to worry about the pink for warning circuit as the CDI should drop cylinders and limit revs if you do overheat.
Manual choke - looks like you have round bowl carbs - does the CES tray have the rectangular hole next to where cables come through for the manual choke. If you still have choke butterflies you just need the manual pull choke and linkage which will operate them. I probably have a few if so.

You can also ditch the rectifier as won't be charging. Just disconnect the two green wires from stator and remove the rectifier.

I don't think there is a rectangular hole, just the slot for the cables. I'll double check tomorrow, but it still has the choke butterflies.
I have yamaha 90 carbs to go on, also round bowl, but I want to get it going with the standard carbs first, although the linkages are seized.
Excuse my ignorance - is the rectifier the small black box under the CDI? Can I remove the lighting coils from beneath the flywheel?

Removed a lot of the electrics today, starter, solenoid, electric choke, rectifier and lighting coils all gone.
@Phantom 19 - Is this the hole you are meaning?
Be great to get a manual choke mechanism for it

I've got those bits, and I thought that was all I needed but the part of the cable that gets clamped is much further inside the engine, so there must be another bracket I think.
