700xs Rebuild Thread 2

Cince i bought the boat from Rob , sorry stole it from Rob
I have been working on it since last sunday .
I have been closing the hole's in the dash to fit the smartcraft SC1000 speedo/tacho , the SC5000 and an chartplotter , i also orderd some new switch pannels .
I also cut out all the wet balsa and top layer of kevlar , i am making sure the excisting laminate is dry enough to proceed with the rapair on the bottom , hope to start this saturday .
Here is a few picture's what i have done so far , please let me know if you have tips or advise on what i am doing .

Did a dirty job today but its finisched so i can start rebuilding the hull next week
Took a flex with grinding disck grid40 wich did the job just fine , exept the grinding of my finger was not the brightest idea of the day .....
Te bad it was raining today so i had to do the job inside so it looks like snow-world right now inside my storage !
Also removed the footrest en baseplate from the passenger seat this seat will be in line with the drivers seat as the boat will be used for pleasure this year .
And at the end of the day i grinded the dash so i can put on layer 2 .

Did some work on the boat today .
Put on the first 4 layers of woven mat with epoxy (2x 220gr + 2x 300gr), made some fillet's of epoxy/stewathix mix , to create a nice round connection of the excisting floor to the stringers .
This will be coverd with a few layers of mat wich will go from one stringer to the other with a overlap , after that it will be sanded and the new balsa wich came in today , will be glued in and this will be coverd with a few layers of mat again .
Also put a thirth layer off coating on the dash today and took the tabs a part and removed all the bad/loose powdercoating and put a first layer of zf-primer on all the parts .

Out of interest, what finish are you putting on the tabs? trouble with powder coating is as soon as the surafce finish breaks and water gets under it the begining of the end.

The tabs will be coated with 2layers of ZF-primer from de ijssel coatings and after that 3layers of dd-lak from de ijssel coatings in ral 5002 wich i think is the origional color .
I will see how it holds in time , if the coating doesn't hold i will have them anodised in time .

Nice work that isn't going to break again is it ?
A really well done repair I would be tempted to put a few small hardwood ribs over the balsa but it might make it too rigid.

It's starting to take shape again , tomorow i will be fixing the underside of the boat and put on the last layers on the inside

Die motor die ik had 135pk is verkocht en de eigenaar is er heel gelukkig mee om even op je vraag terug te komen van snelle boten forum. De Miura is ook verkocht en heb nog steed contact met de kopers die heel blij met de boot zijn.

Did you use that araldite to bond the balsa? Why did you choose that and whats its like to use?

That Balsa is end grain cut isn't it? Ie, the grain runs from inner laminate to outer laminate?
Because in the pic it looks like the grain runs 'along' the blocks rather than across them.

Not seen it in individual blocks before, usually comes on a scrim.

Glen i used it to glue the balsa indeed , its a epoxy based 2component bonding glue .
It's is tough when aplied but runs wen it is on so all the litle openings will fill when you slide the balsa in please it works very well i must say .

Jon this was the only bals i could get over here it came as planks 10cm wide 100cm in length en 12mm high , i cut it myself into 4,9x4,9cm pieces wich i glued into the boat by slightly sliding the pieces next to eachother so all the litle openings filled itself with the bonding material .
Afther that i sanded it and put a layer of injection resin on .

Today i laminated 3layers of 300grams woven mat on top of the balsa (after sanding ofcourse) with epoxy resin .
Also sanded back the outside of the hull and laminated this in various thicknes and sice mat , so i hope to take care of that next week

I'm not sure how strong/effective the balsa will be if not used in the 'end grain' configuration. It's the resistance to compression in the end grain orientation that makes it such an excellent core material, also, the adhesion to the end of grain is very good. I fear that it will be subject to crushing & tearing (splitting along the grain) under compressive & sheer loads if used in the other plane, leaving you with two separate laminates floating about with fragmented balsa between them.

We used Baltek balsa in the 32, which is a bit pricey, but we didn't want any problems. http://www.corematerials.3acomposite...tek-balsa.html

You've done a beautiful job of this, and the workmanship looks excellent, so I'd hate to see it fail through what 'looks' like a small detail.

One other observation is, the feathered out area on the bottom of the hull looks like you've ground right up to, and possibly into the Kevlar/Aramat woven layer. I think I'd like to see this area get some new woven laminate (on the inside face if necessary, prior to Balsa bonding) of that outer laminate to put back any skin strength that may have been compromised by the damage/grinding out. CSM is not very good under tension, and strength under tension is what you need in a core construction.
