cosworth rib

been busy getting the rib ready for for some testing/thrashing this year
fitted new cambelt pulleys/tensioner and drive belts
reconditioned alternator and starter
all these bits were looking a bit ropey after 4 years layed up
ive fabricated and fitted a larger charge cooler, upgraded the injectors and fitted chip to suit this should get the power upto 340bhp at 19 psi boost as long as i can keep the exhaust temp under control. fitted a second nozzle for water injection to try and help this.
there,s also a shorter drive leg and new prop since it was used last so i havent got a clue what,s going to happen and getting everything to work as planned is going to take more than sticking it in the water and hitting the load pedal.

got the last of the trailer parts back from the galvanizers so should be able to get that finished in the next week or so.been using a really ropey trailer for the last 10 years.never seam to have the spare cash for a new trailer when your boats not finished, total trailer failure has forced my hand so ive gone to town making a really nice job of it.

i post some pics of boat soon but after seing cyc,s/larby,s builds mine looks a bit rough but its a bit of a development project rather than a build/referb.

I'm flattered! My build compared to Cyco's!! I think alongside his, any other build would look like it was thrown together! He's inspired me for my next build, want to do a mint P23 or similar once I've had my fun with the cat!

Cosworth

I always wondered what one of these engine would go like in a boat.
What turbo are you using? isn't there an issue with using normal automotive turbos for marine applications? someting to do with the constant boost!

I run a cosworth YB in a MK1 escort 410bhp lots of fun.

What does the rib go like with that engine in it?

Keep the pics coming, oh and I like the tabs good effort.

Yb

The turbo is a modified garrett t3 has larger 360 thrust bearing, inkonel turbine wheel/shaft and wastegate to take the heat and the water cooling is now raw water through 1/2 steam hose.
it will run upto 30 psi but keeping the pistons from melting is the limiting factor.
aluminium melts around 600c
with water injection i been running it upto 950c exh temp for long periods without any problems but as soon as you go over 1025c it melts.
ive strugled to get the speed i want from the boat mainley due i think to poor prop position and gear ratio.but to be fair its faster in the rough and on a run than boats ive had before that were a lot faster round the bay. this is the third leg to go on the boat and its definatly looks better height, gear ratio is good and prop selection thereticaly right.

can i ask how much did it cost to get your trailer dipped?
is it new or have you had it re-done?

galv

it cost 210 its new steel so didnt need blasting b4 dipping
they go by weight in then weight out for cost
make sure you drill all sections of box top and bottom both ends so it fill,s and drains properly.
trailers 7.5m long

Are you adding an intercooler? To get better performance you want the air as cold as possible going in. I would add 1 and sit it behind an air duct connected to a pipe running to a scoop which would force the cold air down as it went along. Im just speaking from past experiences working with high performance turbo cars.

He's running a charge cooler, much more efficient when you've got a nice easy supply of cold water!

Yep its a converted 4x4 cossie intercooler there a lot better cooling capacity than the 2wd version but not to bulky to fit in the boat.

if you could find a large turbo escort cossie intercooler they are roughly the same size as a 4x4 sierra and have a built in charge cooler

I,m sure they were the same as 4x4 but had a blank for fitting water injection nozle. late ecu also has baby board ready to run w/inj with correct software.

my intercooler has been jacketed with alloy box and has fittings welded in for raw water cooling its then anodized to resist corrosion you can see it in first photo of engine dry fit photo.

bit by bit

Its been slow progress last couple of weeks had a lot of other stuff to get done but the galvanized nuts/bolts for the trailer turned up today 1 week late and 6 m16 nuts short (thanks techfast they should change there name to dumbslow how hard can it be to read a list and deliver nuts and bolts) I had zinc plated bolts in stock but have been told they don't mix well with galvanized metal and stainless isn't much better .Gripe over i've now fitted shackles links springs and hitch to trailer, hubs in this week so getting closer.
Not sure were the boat should rest on bunks was thinking the flat area just inside the tubes or the chine rails?
Fitted new water pump impeller as outlet was splurging a bit,its a git of a job but it was knackered when i got it out.Hopefully i can get boat onto trailer next weekend and then into barn for clean up and check over.
Trim tab fittings turned up so hust trying to source some pumps for the right money found some merc ones on trading post in sadles i was hoping they can be adapted to suit remote app.
i will post some photos when something interesting happens
