Although a couple of petrol boats went round Britain last year - a twin 525 and a pair of 496's I think that diesel is the way to go as pretty much every other competitor agreed with it seems - so it would have to be built for those as well.
One of those with a pair of 1200's on number sixes would make a fantastic Poker Run boat though!

Nice looking boat but you don't seem to be thinking of including outboards Cookee, why is that as there were a very large number of outboard powered boats in the RB08 mostly fitted with twin 300 Merc Opti's, although there where also Verdaos and Suzuki's so I would have thought ........
I will certainly be doing it in an outboard powered boat - hopefully!

There were a lot of Diesels as well!
If we had an enquiry for an outboard version I'm sure we could accommodate that - what class and which outboards were you thinking of? I like the Verados although I haven't looked to see which class they would fit in?
At the end of the day it was designed as an in house project with diesels for Class E, but we have already had outside interest and we haven't (quite) started building it yet!

It's all ticking along nicely and we will be starting to build the plug as soon as our other commitments allow us and we settle on the final running surface designs.
The options we have at the moment on motors are the Steyr and the Yanmar, and given the problems that Jon has had we are currently heading towards the Yanmar, but of course they may be even worse!
Has anyone got any other ideas as to what diesel would be best? The class E is a 6.5 litre total limit with the next class up being 10 litre, and the one beyond that being 13 litre, although we would need a bigger boat for that class I think!
Happy to consider anything, but power to weight is the critical factor as well as reliability.
Thanks!

possibly an expensive yet fast solution that i think has been done before would be to marinise some car deisel engines bmw merc 3L deisel engines etc are plentiful. and show good power. i guess it would depend on the money being spent.
P.s looks stunning already whatever you do im sure it will be fast as f**k

The Yanmar 3 litre / 260hp is the BMW 3 litre block - my question is really for the engines that are already marinised as we need reliability above (almost) everything, and we haven't got the time to experiment getting things right in marinising something from scratch, besides it would need the engine mapping and all sorts of other things changing as boat engine don't run cats, need a different power band etc.
I'm sure it will be fast as f**k .................. if we get the engine choice right it will also be reliable as f**k as well!

i trust you've looked at the VW line-up. Perhaps with your connections you could talk them into supporting racing?

I would love to run the 5 litre that I have in the Touareg, it would make a fantastic boat motor and fit just right in the 10 litre class, and of course a 34' boat would probably go very well indeed with a pair of those in it! Sadly as far as I am aware they haven't marinised the V10 yet. Also I am not that well connected!

Are you needing me to build you a steam engine to fit in that nice Baker boat of yours?

Ilmor do a 700h.p. v 10 fully marinised and their own leg to match, hell of a thing, you would only need one.

The Touareg makes good power, but... How about the Audi Le Mans engine? It's a diesel, light weight and make what? 750 hp?
If VW would increase the displacement of the V10 so that 500 hp is possible, it would sell..

I'm not sure the Audi Le Mans motor would make that much power tuned for an endurance boat, but it is certainly an interesting prospect.
The other problem I have is that if I go over the 10 litre for a pair of engines limit I get into the next class up, and the boat then starts to look a bit short compared to the competition making it a bit pointless, and with the Yanmar or Steyr I'm in Class E in the up to 6.5 litre class (with Jon and Gordon), or in Class D with up to 10 litres, and that is about as high as I want to go with this hull.
If anyone is wondering why 34'? Well that's what fits in our premises without knocking walls down!
